Chapter 11: The Test Daniel Hid

I gripped the phone.

“What did you say?””

Lily started crying.

“Sarah, I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

“Find out what?””

She took a shaky breath.

“Daniel was worried about the pregnancy.””

My hand moved to my stomach.

“Worried?””

“Yes.””

“About our daughter?””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“About whether the baby was his.””

The words hit harder than the cake.

Harder than every document.

Harder than every lie.

I couldn’t speak.

My mind went completely empty.

“No.””

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I repeated it.

Because if I said it enough times, maybe it would disappear.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“Then why would he think that?””

Lily cried softly.

“Because Evelyn put the idea in his head.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Evelyn.

The woman who turned a baby’s gender into a family crisis.

The woman who searched through my past.

The woman who wanted control.

“What did she tell him?””

Lily hesitated.

“She told him there were questions about your timeline.””

I felt sick.

“She accused me?””

“She suggested it.””

I walked to the window.

My entire body felt cold.

“And Daniel believed her?””

“I don’t know.””

“Yes, he did.””

Because he didn’t defend me.

Not once.

Lily whispered:

“Sarah, I’m sorry.””

I ended the call.

I needed air.

I needed space.

I needed to remember who I was before everyone else’s lies became my reality.

When I returned home, Daniel was sitting in the living room.

He looked up.

“Was that Lily?””

I stared at him.

“Did you question whether this baby was yours?””

His face went pale.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

“Sarah…”

“Answer me.””

He stood.

“I was confused.””

I laughed.

“You were confused?””

“Yes.””

“You thought I cheated?””

“No.””

“You hired lawyers.””

His face changed.

“You know about that?””

“Yes.””

He looked down.

“I never wanted to hurt you.””

I stepped closer.

“But you did.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

He looked at me.

“My mother kept telling me things.””

I shook my head.

“So you trusted her over me.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice broke.

“You knew me.””

He looked away.

“You knew my heart.””

Silence.

“And you still let her make you doubt me.””

He had tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I wanted to believe that.

A part of me still wanted to.

But trust doesn’t disappear because of one mistake.

It disappears because of a thousand choices.

I packed a small bag that night.

Not because I had nowhere to go.

Because I needed to choose myself.

Before I left, Daniel stopped me.

“Sarah.””

I turned.

“I never had proof.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked ashamed.

“I never found anything. I never knew anything was wrong.””

“Then why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“And fear was enough to destroy our family?””

He didn’t answer.

I opened the door.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Is this Sarah?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Dr. Morgan.””

I frowned.

“Why are you calling me?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I reviewed the medical records connected to your pregnancy.””

My heart started racing.

“Why?””

Her voice became serious.

“Because someone requested information about your unborn child without your permission.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked confused.

The doctor continued.

“And Sarah…”

“Yes?””

“The request wasn’t from your husband.””

My blood went cold.

“Then who?””

May you like

The answer came.

And I knew exactly whose name I would hear.
