Chapter 7: The Secret Evelyn Saved
I stared at Daniel.
For the first time in our entire marriage, I saw fear in his eyes.
Not guilt.
Not frustration.
Fear.
And that scared me more than anything.
“What did she find?”” I asked.
Daniel looked down.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
My voice was sharper than I expected.
“No more pauses. No more protecting people who hurt me.””
He swallowed.
“My mother hired someone to look into your family.””
I crossed my arms.
“Why?””
“Because she wanted leverage.””
The word hit me.
Leverage.
Not concern.
Not curiosity.
Leverage.
“She wanted something she could use against me.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
I laughed quietly.
“My own mother-in-law was collecting weapons.””
He didn’t correct me.
Because he knew.
“Tell me what she found.””
Daniel sat down.
“She found out about your father.””
My body went still.
My father.
A subject I rarely discussed.
Not because I was ashamed.
Because it was complicated.
“My father?””
Daniel nodded.
“She found out about the lawsuit years ago.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
That old wound.
The one I thought was closed.
My father had owned a small construction company.
For years, he worked every day trying to build something for our family.
Then one accident changed everything.
A business partner betrayed him.
A lawsuit followed.
The company collapsed.
My father spent years fighting to clear his name.
Eventually, he did.
But the damage was already done.
“What does that have to do with me?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“She thinks she can make people believe you came from a troubled family.””
I stared at him.
“That’s it?””
He looked away.
“She wanted to convince people you weren’t good enough for our family.””
I felt anger rise in my chest.
“Our family?””
I stepped closer.
“Daniel, your mother smashed a cake into my face because my baby is a girl.””
He lowered his head.
“She crossed a line.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“She crossed a line years ago.””
I walked toward the window.
Outside, everything looked normal.
Neighbors walking.
Cars passing.
People living ordinary lives.
Nobody knew my life had fallen apart inside these walls.
“She doesn’t hate me because of my father.””
Daniel stayed silent.
“She hates me because I’m not the person she wanted.””
Finally, he whispered:
“You’re right.””
I turned around.
That was the first honest thing he had said.
And somehow, it hurt.
Because honesty from him now felt too late.
The next morning, I met my father at a coffee shop.
I told him everything.
Not every detail.
But enough.
He listened quietly.
Then he surprised me.
“I’m sorry.””
I frowned.
“For what?””
“For not warning you.””
I shook my head.
“Dad, you didn’t know.””
He looked down at his coffee.
“I knew people like Evelyn existed.””
His voice became softer.
“People who think money and family names matter more than character.””
I reached across the table.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
“Whatever she says about me, whatever she finds, don’t let her make you question who you are.””
I smiled sadly.
“I wish Daniel understood that.””
My father looked away.
“Maybe he does now.””
“Maybe.””
But I didn’t believe it.
That afternoon, I received an email.
No name.
No explanation.
Just one attachment.
A photo.
My heart started racing before I even opened it.
Because I recognized the handwriting on the note attached.
Evelyn’s.
The message beneath it was short.
“You deserve to know what your husband was really planning.””
My hands shook.
I opened the file.
And what I saw made my entire body freeze.
It was a conversation between Daniel and Evelyn.
A conversation from three weeks before my baby shower.
And one sentence stood out.
“After the baby is born, Sarah won’t have a reason to stay.””
I covered my mouth.
But there was another message.
One that made my blood run cold.
Evelyn had written:
“Make sure she never finds out about the other woman.””
Other woman.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Because suddenly Rebecca wasn’t the only secret.
There was someone else.
