Chapter 6: The Plan Behind The Smile
I drove home without remembering the drive.
That scared me.
Because every street looked familiar.
Every building.
Every traffic light.
But my mind was somewhere else.
It was replaying every moment with Daniel.
The first time we met.
The first time he told me he loved me.
The night he proposed.
The day we found out we were having a baby.
How many of those moments were real?
How many were part of a plan?
When I entered the house, Daniel was waiting.
He stood immediately.
“You went to see your attorney.””
I stopped.
“How did you know?””
He didn’t answer.
I stared at him.
“Did you put someone on me?””
“No.””
“Then how?””
His silence returned.
That silence I had started to hate.
I placed my purse down.
“Did you plan to leave me after our daughter was born?””
His face changed.
There was no point hiding anymore.
“Sarah…”
“Answer me.””
He looked down.
That was enough.
I felt something break again.
But this time, there were no tears.
“Why?””
He sat down.
“I thought it was the only way.””
“The only way to what?””
“To protect my family.””
I stared at him.
“Your family?””
He nodded.
“My mother believed everything would be easier if you and I separated.””
I laughed.
“So you listened.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“I was confused.””
“You signed papers.””
He looked away.
I walked closer.
“You moved money.””
Silence.
“You tried to remove me from my own home.””
Silence.
“You planned to leave after I gave birth.””
His eyes filled with regret.
But regret was not the same as love.
“Sarah, I made mistakes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I pointed at him.
“You made decisions.””
He looked at me.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why did you keep doing things that would?””
He had no answer.
For the first time, I saw Daniel clearly.
Not the husband I hoped he was.
The man he chose to become.
My phone rang.
I looked down.
It was my attorney.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Mr. Collins sounded serious.
“Sarah, I found something else.””
I stepped away from Daniel.
“What?””
“We reviewed Evelyn’s financial records connected to the property.””
My heart tightened.
“And?””
“There are payments.””
“To who?””
A pause.
Then he said:
“To a private investigator.””
I looked at Daniel.
He noticed my expression.
“What happened?””
I ignored him.
“Why would she hire a private investigator?””
Mr. Collins hesitated.
“Because she wasn’t just gathering information about the house.””
I felt cold.
“What was she investigating?””
Another pause.
Then his voice lowered.
“You.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know yet.””
I looked at Daniel.
He looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
“Daniel.””
He slowly stood.
“Sarah…”
I ended the call.
“What did your mother find?””
He didn’t move.
“What?””
“Don’t lie to me again.””
His face went pale.
Because he knew.
I knew.
Something bigger was coming.
Finally, he whispered:
“She found out something about your past.””
My heart stopped.
“My past?””
He nodded slowly.
“And she was planning to use it against you.””
I stared at him.
“What did she find?””
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Then back at me.
And the fear in his eyes told me one thing.
Whatever Evelyn discovered…
May you like
It was something she believed could destroy me.
And she had been saving it for the perfect moment.
