Chapter 3: The Name I Didn’t Recognize

I stared at the signature for almost a full minute.

My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

“Who is that?”” my father asked.

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

But my voice didn’t sound convincing.

Because suddenly, every strange moment from the last year started connecting.

The secret phone calls.

The sudden business trips.

The way Daniel became protective over certain documents.

The way he always said, “Trust me.””

I had trusted him.

That was the part that hurt most.

My father leaned forward.

“Sarah, did Daniel ever mention someone named Rebecca?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

My father opened another page.

“Because this name appears several times.””

Rebecca.

The name felt like a door I didn’t want to open.

But I had already found the key.

That afternoon, I returned home.

Not because I was ready to forgive Daniel.

Because I needed answers.

The house felt different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But it no longer felt like mine.

Daniel was sitting on the couch.

He stood when he saw me.

“Sarah.””

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I need honesty.””

He nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

I placed the document on the table.

“What is this?””

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“Where did you get that?””

“That’s not an answer.””

He looked at the paper.

Then back at me.

“Sarah, there are things you don’t understand.””

I almost smiled.

“You’re right.””

I pointed at the document.

“I don’t understand why my husband signed something with another woman’s name attached.””

He became quiet.

“Who is Rebecca?””

The room felt heavy.

Finally, he whispered.

“She’s someone from my past.””

My heart sank.

“Your past?””

“Yes.””

“Before me?””

He nodded.

I waited.

For an explanation.

For anything.

Instead, he said the one thing that made everything worse.

“She came back recently.””

I felt cold.

“Recently?””

Daniel looked down.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“After the baby was born?””

“No.””

“After my mother embarrassed me?””

“Sarah—”

“When were you going to tell me?””

His silence was louder than words.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, neighbors moved through their normal lives.

Cars passed.

People laughed.

The world continued.

Mine had stopped.

“Is she the reason you tried to change the house papers?””

“No.””

“Then what is the reason?””

He looked away.

And that scared me.

Because Daniel was many things.

But he was never someone who avoided answering questions.

Until now.

“Sarah,” he said quietly.

“I made mistakes.””

I turned around.

“What kind of mistakes?””

Before he could answer, there was a knock at the door.

Daniel froze.

I looked at him.

“Who is that?””

He didn’t move.

The knock came again.

Three slow knocks.

Then a woman’s voice came from the other side.

“Daniel?””

My entire body went cold.

Because I had never heard that voice before.

But Daniel had.

His face lost all color.

The woman spoke again.

“I know Sarah is inside.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked terrified.

And then the woman said the words that changed everything.

“Daniel, she deserves to know that the baby shower wasn’t the first time your mother tried to destroy my life.””
