Chapter 9: The Money Behind the Accident

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood.

“My inheritance?””

Detective Harris nodded.

I looked at Daniel.

“No.””

He immediately shook his head.

“No, Sarah. I didn’t know.””

But I couldn’t stop staring at him.

Because every secret seemed to lead back to him.

Every road.

Every lie.

Every betrayal.

Detective Harris placed the document on the table.

“Your father left behind assets.””

I looked at my mother.

She slowly nodded.

“We hid them.””

“Why?””

“Because Victoria wanted them.””

The pieces started connecting.

The fake name.

The old photograph.

The obsession.

Vanessa wasn’t just after Daniel.

She wasn’t just jealous.

She wanted something that belonged to me.

“She needed me gone.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew.

The accident wasn’t about anger.

It was about money.

Daniel sat down heavily.

“I swear I didn’t know.””

I looked at him.

“Did you know about my inheritance?””

“No.””

“Did Vanessa ever ask you about my family?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation destroyed him.

“Daniel.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“What did she ask?””

He swallowed.

“She asked if your parents had ever left you anything.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you told her?””

“I said I didn’t know.””

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“But you never told your wife she was asking.””

Daniel looked away.

“No.””

I laughed softly.

“How many secrets can one person keep?””

Nobody answered.

That afternoon, the police arrested Vanessa.

Or at least they tried.

By the time they arrived at her apartment, she was gone.

Only one thing was left behind.

A note.

Detective Harris read it aloud.

“She wrote: ‘You’re looking in the wrong direction.’”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He turned the paper over.

There was another sentence.

“She never cared about the money.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Detective Harris continued.

“She cared about making Sarah remember.””

I felt a chill.

Remember what?

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

My daughter was still being monitored.

My husband was sitting outside my room.

And my entire identity felt like a lie.

Around midnight, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

I almost ignored it.

But something told me not to.

A video appeared.

No message.

Just a video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed an old recording.

A little girl.

Me.

Or Emily.

Standing beside a man I didn’t recognize.

My father.

Then Victoria appeared.

Younger.

Angrier.

The audio was unclear.

But one sentence came through.

A sentence that made my entire body freeze.

“You took my daughter.””

The video ended.

I stared at the black screen.

My hands trembled.

Because if Victoria believed I had something to do with her daughter…

Then this was never about revenge.

It was about a child.

A child who had disappeared.

And the final frame of the video showed something I hadn’t noticed before.

A hospital bracelet.

With a name written on it.

Not mine.

Not Emily.

Another name.

May you like

A baby’s name.

My baby’s name.
