Chapter 3: The Evidence in the Glove Box

The detective placed a clear evidence bag on my hospital table.

Inside was a small envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Sarah Carter.

My stomach tightened.

“I found this inside Vanessa Reed’s vehicle,” Detective Harris said.

I stared at it.

“Why would she have something with my name on it?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

Daniel stood near the window, silent.

I looked at him.

“Did you know?””

He shook his head too quickly.

“No.””

But I noticed something.

He didn’t look surprised.

He looked afraid.

Detective Harris opened his notebook.

“Mrs. Carter, before I show you what’s inside, I need to ask something.””

“What?””

“Have you ever received threats?””

“No.””

“Has Vanessa contacted you before today?””

I hesitated.

“Not directly.””

“Not directly?””

I looked at Daniel.

His jaw tightened.

“Daniel received messages from her.””

The detective turned.

“You didn’t mention that.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“It wasn’t important.””

My eyes burned.

“Not important?””

The man I married couldn’t even look at me.

Detective Harris slowly removed the envelope.

Inside were printed screenshots.

Text messages.

Between Daniel and Vanessa.

The first one was dated seven months earlier.

*Vanessa: She still doesn’t know, right?*

My chest tightened.

The second message.

*Daniel: No. Please stop asking.*

The third.

*Vanessa: Then tell her. Or I will.*

I couldn’t breathe.

“She knew about me,” I whispered.

Detective Harris nodded.

“Yes.””

I turned toward Daniel.

“How long?””

He stayed silent.

“How long did she know about me?””

“Sarah…”

“Answer me.””

His voice cracked.

“Since before the pregnancy.””

The room became completely quiet.

Before the pregnancy.

Before my daughter existed.

Before I had ever suspected anything.

Daniel had already been living a lie.

I looked at him like I was seeing a stranger.

“You brought her into our marriage before we even knew we were having a baby.””

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake is forgetting an anniversary.””

My voice trembled.

“This was a choice.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I love you.””

I moved away.

“No. You love what I gave you.””

His face fell.

Detective Harris cleared his throat.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

More?

He placed another photo on the table.

A picture from a security camera.

Vanessa standing outside the hospital entrance.

Watching.

Waiting.

The timestamp was from thirty minutes before the accident.

“She was already here,” Detective Harris said.

My hands turned cold.

“She planned to meet me.””

“Possibly.””

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

His expression had changed.

“What?””

He stared at the photo.

Then at the envelope.

Then at Vanessa’s messages.

“She wasn’t supposed to know about the appointment.””

I slowly turned toward him.

“What did you just say?””

Daniel froze.

Too late.

Detective Harris noticed too.

“You told her?””

Daniel looked trapped.

“I…”

My heart sank.

The accident.

The hospital.

The secret baby.

None of it was random.

My husband had been the connection between us the entire time.

And then Daniel whispered the one sentence that made me realize I had never truly known him.

“Vanessa wasn’t supposed to find out you were still alive.””
