Chapter 12: Vanessa’s Final Confession

I refused to meet Vanessa alone.

Detective Harris arranged everything.

A small interview room.

Two officers outside.

Cameras recording.

No secrets.

No more secrets.

When Vanessa walked in, she looked completely different.

No designer clothes.

No confident smile.

No perfect makeup.

Just a tired woman carrying years of anger.

She sat across from me.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Then she smiled sadly.

“You really don’t remember me.””

I felt a chill.

“I should?””

She looked down.

“When you were little, you called me Auntie.””

My breath caught.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“My real name is Victoria Lane.””

I already knew.

But hearing her say it made everything feel real.

“I was there the night you were born.””

I stared at her.

“Where was Lily?””

Her face broke.

There it was.

Pain.

Not anger.

Pain.

“She was taken from me.””

“By my father?””

Victoria looked at me.

“I thought so.””

“Thought?””

She looked away.

“Your father lied to everyone.””

My hands tightened.

“Then tell me the truth.””

She took a deep breath.

“Your father didn’t steal Lily.””

The room went silent.

“Then who did?””

Victoria looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

The answer shocked me.

“You destroyed my life because you didn’t know?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I spent thirty years believing your father took my daughter.””

“And now?””

“Now I know I was wrong.””

I stared at her.

“Then why did you come after me?””

Victoria looked down.

“Because your father left something behind.””

“What?””

“A recording.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Where is it?””

Victoria looked at him.

“Hidden.””

“Where?””

She looked back at me.

“With Sarah.””

I frowned.

“With me?””

She nodded.

“Your father knew one day the truth would come out.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“What did he leave me?””

Victoria whispered:

“The proof of who took Lily.””

The room went silent.

“Where?””

Victoria looked at my stomach.

Then at me.

“The same place he hid your identity.””

I didn’t understand.

Then she said:

“Your hospital records.””

My blood ran cold.

The hospital.

The bracelet.

The birth.

Everything had happened there.

Detective Harris stood.

“We need to access those records.””

Victoria nodded.

But before we left, she grabbed my hand.

I almost pulled away.

Then I saw her face.

She wasn’t threatening me.

She was begging.

“Sarah.””

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

For the first time, she sounded like a mother.

Not a villain.

Not a stranger.

Just someone who had lost a child.

“I should have protected you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I knew your father was hiding something.””

She squeezed my hand.

“And I was too angry to see that you were a victim too.””

The door opened.

Detective Harris stepped inside.

“Sarah.””

I turned.

His expression was serious.

“What?””

He held up a folder.

“We accessed the original hospital records.””

My heart raced.

“And?””

He looked at the page.

“There was a second birth certificate.””

I stared.

“For Lily?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then whose?””

Detective Harris looked at me.

“Your daughter’s.””

I felt the room spin.

“My daughter?””

He nodded.

“The records show something impossible.””

“What?””

He slowly turned the paper toward me.

“The hospital bracelet Vanessa found…”

His voice dropped.

“It wasn’t from thirty years ago.””

I looked at the date.

My hands went numb.

Because the bracelet belonged to my baby.

May you like

And written beside her name was a note.

*Biological match pending.*
