Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Wheel

The day I almost lost my baby was the day I discovered my husband had built an entire second life behind my back.

I was eight months pregnant when a black SUV jumped the curb in the hospital parking lot and drove straight toward me.

For one second, I stood frozen.

The morning sun reflected off the windshield, making it impossible to see the driver’s face.

I told myself she would stop.

She had to stop.

But the engine roared louder.

The tires turned.

And then the front bumper crashed into me.

My body slammed against the pavement.

A scream escaped my throat before I even felt the pain.

My hospital folder scattered across the concrete. My purse landed several feet away. My hands immediately wrapped around my stomach.

“No… no, please…”

The sharp pain came a second later.

Then the warmth.

I looked down and saw the blood spreading across my dress.

“My baby,” I whispered.

The world around me became blurry.

People were shouting.

Someone dropped a coffee cup.

A nurse near the entrance screamed for security.

Then the driver’s door opened.

Slowly.

A woman stepped out wearing black heels and a designer coat.

She didn’t run.

She didn’t panic.

She simply adjusted her sunglasses and looked down at me.

Long dark hair.

Perfect makeup.

A familiar face.

Vanessa.

The woman whose name I had seen appear again and again on my husband’s phone.

The woman he swore was “just a coworker.””

The woman he told me I was being paranoid about.

She looked at the blood on the ground.

Then she looked at me.

And she smiled.

“Seriously?”” Vanessa said.

“Are you going to make a scene right here?””

I stared at her in disbelief.

“My baby…” I gasped.

“Help me.””

She crossed her arms.

“You always were dramatic, Sarah.””

My heart broke harder than the impact.

Not because of her words.

Because she said my name like she had known me for years.

Like she had studied me.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

“I need an ambulance,” I whispered.

Vanessa tilted her head.

“You should have listened.””

My breathing became shallow.

“Listened to what?””

She took a step closer.

“To the fact that Daniel was never happy with you.””

The sound of footsteps suddenly echoed across the parking lot.

“Sarah!””

My husband’s voice.

Daniel ran toward me, his face changing the moment he saw the blood.

“No. No, no, no…”

He dropped beside me.

“Sarah, look at me. Stay awake.””

I grabbed his arm with all the strength I had left.

“She hit me.””

Daniel froze.

Slowly, he turned toward Vanessa.

His expression changed from fear to confusion.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she placed one hand gently over her stomach.

Daniel noticed.

His face went pale.

“Vanessa…”

She smiled.

“Don’t look so surprised.””

The ambulance siren sounded in the distance.

But nobody moved.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not me.

Because I already knew something was wrong.

Daniel wasn’t shocked to see her.

He was shocked because he was afraid.

“Tell her,” Vanessa said softly.

Daniel looked at her.

“Stop.””

Vanessa laughed.

“No. She deserves to know.””

I looked between them.

“Know what?””

Vanessa stepped closer, one hand still resting on her stomach.

Then she delivered the sentence that changed my entire world.

“I’m carrying Daniel’s baby.””

The parking lot went silent.

My fingers loosened around my husband’s sleeve.

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I stared at him.

Waiting.

Begging.

Hoping he would say she was lying.

But he didn’t.

He just looked away.

And that was when I realized the accident wasn’t the first betrayal.

It was only the moment I finally saw the truth.
