Chapter 2: The Secret He Protected

The doctors told me my baby was lucky.

Lucky.

That word stayed in my head while I lay in the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling.

My daughter survived.

I survived.

But something inside me had already broken.

Daniel sat beside me for three hours without saying a word.

For three hours, he held my hand.

For three hours, I hated that a part of me still wanted to believe him.

Finally, I pulled my hand away.

“Tell me the truth.””

Daniel looked down.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No more excuses. No more ‘it’s complicated.’ Tell me how long.””

He swallowed.

“Six months.””

The room felt smaller.

Six months.

I touched my stomach.

I had been pregnant for eight months.

Eight months of doctor appointments.

Eight months of preparing a nursery.

Eight months of believing I was building a family.

And for six of those months, my husband had been sleeping with another woman.

“You let me sit there and choose baby names while you were with her?””

Daniel wiped his face.

“I was going to end it.””

I laughed.

A painful, empty laugh.

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“When, Daniel?””

He looked away.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

The door opened before he could respond.

My mother walked in carrying flowers.

The moment she saw Daniel’s face, she knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

Daniel stood.

“I’ll give you two some space.””

My mother watched him leave.

Then she looked at me.

“Sarah?””

I tried to stay strong.

I really did.

But the moment I heard my own mother’s voice, everything collapsed.

“He cheated on me.””

Her expression changed instantly.

“What?””

“And she ran me over.””

My mother went completely still.

“Who?””

I looked toward the hospital window.

“The woman he cheated with.””

The next morning, the police came to take my statement.

A detective named Harris sat beside my bed with a notebook.

“Mrs. Carter, did the driver intentionally hit you?””

I remembered Vanessa’s calm face.

Her smile.

Her words.

“You should’ve stayed out of the way.””

“I don’t know,” I said.

Detective Harris studied me.

“You said she knew who you were.””

“Yes.””

“And she knew you were pregnant?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He wrote something down.

“Then I have another question.””

“What?””

He looked at me carefully.

“Why was she at the hospital?””

I froze.

I hadn’t thought about that.

Vanessa hadn’t been driving randomly.

She knew where I would be.

She knew my appointment schedule.

She knew I was there.

That night, while Daniel thought I was asleep, I heard him whispering outside my hospital room.

“I told you this was a mistake.””

Vanessa’s voice answered through the phone.

“You said you loved me.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Not like this.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

I quietly walked toward the door.

Vanessa laughed.

“You don’t get to act innocent now, Daniel.””

“I didn’t ask you to do this.””

“No,” she replied.

“But you promised me everything.””

My hand tightened around the door handle.

Everything?

Daniel had promised her everything?

Then I heard Vanessa say something that made my blood run cold.

“Especially after what we did before she found out.””

I stopped breathing.

What we did?

Before I could open the door, Daniel spoke again.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa’s voice became softer.

“You know exactly what I mean.””

The call ended.

I stood there in the darkness, unable to move.

Because for the first time, I wondered if Vanessa hadn’t come to hurt me because of jealousy.

Maybe she came because she was afraid I would discover something else.

May you like

Something Daniel had been hiding.

And the next morning, Detective Harris arrived with evidence from Vanessa’s car that changed everything.
