Chapter 14: The Daughter They Hid

My mother’s confession destroyed the last piece of my childhood.

She sat across from me, crying.

Not the kind of crying people do when they want forgiveness.

The kind they do when they have carried something too heavy for too long.

“Mom.””

My voice was barely a whisper.

“Explain.””

She looked at my hands.

At the ring on my finger.

At the hospital bracelet around my wrist.

Then she finally spoke.

“Lily was alive.””

My chest tightened.

“Where?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“She was with us.””

The room went silent.

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

She looked at me.

“Sarah…”

“Emily.””

The correction came from nowhere.

Everyone stopped.

I swallowed.

“My name was Emily.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

A lifetime of confusion suddenly had a name.

Emily.

Not Sarah.

Not the person I had always thought I was.

My mother continued.

“After your father disappeared, I was told to protect both children.””

I stared.

“Both?””

She nodded.

“You and Lily.””

My heart pounded.

“Then why didn’t I know?””

“Because Lily was sick.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She needed medical treatment. Your father believed Victoria would find her if she knew she was alive.””

I looked toward Vanessa.

Victoria.

The woman who had spent years searching.

The woman who believed her child was stolen.

“My father hid her.””

My mother nodded.

“He thought he was protecting her.””

“But he changed my identity.””

“Yes.””

“And Lily?””

Her eyes filled.

“She was raised under another name.””

I felt dizzy.

“What name?””

My mother looked at me.

Then whispered:

“Emma.””

The room went silent.

Detective Harris immediately looked up.

“Emma?””

My mother nodded.

“Emma Carter.””

I stared.

The name felt familiar.

Then I realized why.

It was my daughter’s middle name.

The name Daniel and I chose together.

The name I thought came from nowhere.

My breathing stopped.

“No.””

My mother reached for me.

“Sarah—”

“Daniel knew.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked terrified.

“What?””

I stared at him.

“You suggested that name.””

His face changed.

“I…”

“You told me you always loved the name Emma.””

Daniel looked away.

And that was enough.

My heart shattered.

“How?””

He whispered:

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“I swear I didn’t know.””

Detective Harris interrupted.

“Mr. Carter.””

Daniel stopped.

“Did your family have any connection to Victoria Lane?””

Daniel froze.

Then slowly nodded.

“My father.””

The room went quiet.

“What about him?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He knew her.””

I felt sick.

The web was bigger than I ever imagined.

My husband’s family.

My father’s secrets.

Victoria’s missing daughter.

My own child.

Everything connected.

Then Detective Harris’s phone rang.

He answered.

After a few seconds, his expression changed.

“What happened?””

He listened.

Then looked directly at me.

“Sarah.””

I stood.

“What?””

His voice was low.

“The person who ordered the DNA test has been identified.””

My heart raced.

“Who?””

He looked at Daniel.

Nobody moved.

Then he said:

“It wasn’t Vanessa.””

A terrible feeling filled the room.

“Then who?””

Detective Harris looked down at his phone.

“The request was submitted from an account belonging to…”

May you like

He paused.

“Your father.””
