Chapter 15: The Truth He Left Behind

I thought there was nothing left that could shock me.

I was wrong.

My father.

The man everyone said was gone.

The man whose secrets had followed me my entire life.

The man who had apparently known everything.

“He ordered the DNA test?””

My voice barely worked.

Detective Harris nodded.

“According to the records.””

“But he’s been dead for years.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother whispered:

“He isn’t.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“He’s alive.””

The room exploded into silence.

Daniel stared.

“Your father is alive?””

My mother nodded slowly.

“I saw him.””

“When?””

She looked down.

“Before you married Daniel.””

My heart felt like it was being pulled apart.

“You knew?””

“I wanted to tell you.””

“But you didn’t.””

She started crying.

“He made me promise.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone keeps making promises while I lose my entire life.””

Nobody responded.

Because it was true.

Detective Harris stood.

“We need to find him.””

But before anyone moved, the hospital lights flickered.

Everyone looked up.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time there was a message.

*You finally know the truth.*

My hands trembled.

A second message appeared.

*But you still don’t know why I saved you.*

I stared at the screen.

Saved me?

Who?

Then a third message.

*Meet me where it started.*

An address appeared.

The old hospital.

The place where I was born.

The place where Lily disappeared.

The place where my entire life changed.

Daniel looked at my phone.

“Don’t go.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because it’s a trap.””

I nodded.

“Maybe.””

“But?””

I looked toward the window.

For thirty years, everyone had decided things for me.

My father.

My mother.

Daniel.

Victoria.

Everyone except me.

“But I’m tired of running from a story I never chose.””

Detective Harris agreed to come with me.

Daniel wanted to join.

I almost refused.

Then I looked at him.

“You come because you tell the truth.””

He nodded.

“I will.””

When we arrived at the abandoned hospital wing, everything felt familiar.

Too familiar.

The old walls.

The empty halls.

The smell of dust and medicine.

Detective Harris followed the address to an old storage room.

Inside was a single box.

My name was written on it.

Emily.

Not Sarah.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

And one final recording.

I pressed play.

A man’s voice filled the room.

My father.

My knees almost gave out.

“If you are hearing this, then Victoria found you.””

I covered my mouth.

His voice continued.

“I failed both of you.””

A pause.

“I failed Lily.””

Another pause.

“And I failed Emily.””

Daniel looked at me.

The recording continued.

“The truth is simple.””

The room went silent.

“I did not hide Lily from Victoria.””

My heart raced.

“Victoria hid Lily from me.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“Because Lily was not the only child taken that night.””

I felt cold.

The next words changed everything.

“There were three babies.””

Detective Harris looked shocked.

Three?

My father’s voice continued.

“And one of them was never supposed to survive.””

The recording stopped.

The room went completely silent.

Then a sound came from behind us.

A woman’s voice.

A voice I knew.

“You finally found it.””

We turned.

Victoria stood in the doorway.

But she wasn’t alone.

Beside her was a woman around my age.

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

And she whispered:

“Emily.””

I couldn’t move.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it before.

Not in memories.

Not in photographs.

But every morning when I looked in the mirror.

Victoria stepped forward.

“She’s your sister.””

May you like

And the woman beside her said the words that changed my entire world.

“I’m Lily.””
