Chapter 8: The Name I Never Knew
The next morning, my mother arrived with a box.
I knew immediately something was wrong.
She didn’t bring flowers.
She didn’t bring food.
She brought memories.
“Mom?””
She placed the box on the chair beside my bed.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
My stomach tightened.
“Find out what?””
She looked at Daniel.
Then at Detective Harris.
“Maybe they should hear this too.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What is happening?””
My mother opened the box.
Inside were old photographs.
Documents.
A hospital bracelet.
I recognized the bracelet immediately.
My name was written on it.
But something was wrong.
The name wasn’t Sarah Carter.
It said:
*Emily Lane.*
I stared.
“No.””
My mother’s eyes filled with tears.
“Sarah…”
“No.””
I pushed the box away.
“That’s not my name.””
She reached for my hand.
“It was.””
The room went silent.
My entire life suddenly felt like it was built on glass.
“What are you saying?””
My mother took a shaky breath.
“When you were six years old, we changed your identity.””
I couldn’t speak.
Daniel looked just as shocked as I was.
“Why?””
My mother looked down.
“Because someone was trying to take you.””
The words barely registered.
“Who?””
She looked at the documents.
“Victoria Lane.””
My heart stopped.
Vanessa.
My mother nodded slowly.
“She was obsessed with your father.””
I stared at her.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I felt dizzy.
“My father died when I was little.””
“That’s what we told you.””
The room spun.
“What?””
My mother started crying.
“He didn’t die.””
Nobody moved.
“He disappeared.””
I looked at Daniel.
Then Detective Harris.
Everyone was hearing this for the first time.
My mother continued.
“Your father discovered that Victoria was involved in illegal business deals. He reported her.””
“And she came after us?””
My mother nodded.
“She believed your father ruined her life.””
I looked at the old photos.
The little girl.
The name Emily.
The life I never knew existed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because every time Victoria appeared, we moved.””
My mother wiped her tears.
“She always found us.””
A cold realization hit me.
The photograph.
Vanessa knowing me.
The hospital appointment.
The accident.
“She found me again.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had to.
Detective Harris looked at the documents.
“Mrs. Carter, why did she target Daniel?””
My mother looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
Then she looked at me.
“But I think she wanted access to Sarah.””
I corrected her.
“Emily.””
The word felt strange.
Like it belonged to someone else.
Daniel stepped closer.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at him.
“You knew my life was falling apart because of your affair.””
His face dropped.
“But now you know I was running from something I never even knew existed.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t.””
I looked at the man I married.
“The woman you brought into our lives was connected to my past.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“And I helped her get close to you.””
The honesty hurt.
But for the first time, he wasn’t making excuses.
Detective Harris picked up one of the documents.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He held up a paper.
“This document was signed by Victoria Lane.””
My heart raced.
“What does it say?””
He looked at the date.
“Two weeks before the accident.””
I stared.
Two weeks.
“What did she sign?””
Detective Harris looked at me.
“An agreement.””
“What kind?””
He turned the page.
“An agreement stating that if anything happened to you…”
He stopped.
I felt my hands go cold.
“If anything happened to me, what?””
Detective Harris looked at Daniel.
“Your husband would receive control over something.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
May you like
The detective finished:
“Your inheritance.””
