Chapter 9: The Secret in the Recording

We left Olivia's apartment through the rear entrance.

Jessica drove, Michael sat beside her, and I sat in the back with Olivia and Noah.

Nobody spoke for the first ten minutes.

The streets were nearly empty, washed in the orange glow of streetlights. Every pair of headlights behind us made Olivia turn around.

She had placed Noah in his carrier and covered him with a soft blanket. Whenever he stirred, she touched his tiny hand through the fabric.

I watched her and thought about the little girl who used to sleep beside me during thunderstorms.

We had shared a bedroom, stolen cookies from our mother's kitchen, and whispered about our futures long after everyone else had gone to bed.

I had imagined Olivia standing beside me at my wedding.

I had never imagined her becoming the person who helped destroy my marriage.

But I also knew Daniel had spent years manipulating both of us.

Understanding that didn't erase what she had done.

It only made the truth more complicated.

Jessica pulled into a quiet parking lot behind a closed office building.

A man in his late fifties stood beneath the security light, wearing a brown jacket and holding a leather briefcase.

"This is Marcus," Jessica said.

He shook Michael's hand, then looked at me.

"You're Sarah?""

"Yes.""

"I'm sorry we've had to meet under these circumstances.""

He opened the rear door and glanced at Noah.

"Is the baby safe?""

"For now," I replied.

Marcus nodded.

"Then let's get inside.""

He led us through a side entrance into a small office with filing cabinets, a desk, and two battered sofas. He locked the door behind us and drew the blinds.

After hearing our story, he remained silent for nearly a minute.

Finally, he looked at Michael.

"You understand that these documents could expose you too?""

Michael nodded.

"I know.""

"And if you concealed evidence connected to the accident, you may have legal problems of your own.""

"I know that too.""

Marcus leaned back.

"Then why come forward now?""

Michael looked at Noah.

"Because Daniel is using the same methods again. He's building a legal story in which Sarah is the criminal, Olivia is an unfit mother, and I'm a dead man whose identity can be used whenever it suits him.""

Marcus studied him.

"Do you have proof?""

Michael removed the key from his pocket.

"The original recording is in a storage unit outside Nashville.""

Marcus frowned.

"Why didn't you retrieve it years ago?""

"Because I was afraid. And because I believed Daniel would leave Sarah alone if I stayed hidden.""

I felt anger rise in my chest.

"You made that decision for me.""

Michael looked at me.

"Yes.""

"Do you understand what that cost me?""

His eyes filled with tears.

"Every day.""

I looked away.

Marcus interrupted gently.

"We can deal with the past later. Right now, we need to secure whatever evidence exists and make sure the police receive it directly.""

He picked up his phone.

"I have a contact with the state investigators. I'll call her in the morning.""

"Why not tonight?"" Jessica asked.

"Because I need to know exactly what we're handing over. If Ryan has contacts inside the local department, we don't want the evidence disappearing before it reaches someone independent.""

He looked at Michael.

"Can you describe the recording?""

Michael nodded.

"I recorded a conversation between Daniel and Ryan three days before the accident. They discussed the financial scheme, the vehicle, and the plan to make it look like I had fled the country.""

"Did they mention Christopher?""

"Yes.""

Michael hesitated.

"They argued about him.""

I leaned forward.

"What did they say?""

"Christopher had discovered that Daniel was stealing money from the company. He threatened to go to the authorities. Daniel wanted him out of the way.""

The room went cold.

"Was Christopher supposed to die?"" I asked.

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know. I heard Daniel say that Christopher needed to be frightened into silence. Ryan said they could make the accident look convincing.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"That sounds like attempted coercion at minimum. Depending on the rest of the evidence, it could be much worse.""

Michael stared at the floor.

"There's another thing.""

I closed my eyes briefly.

"Of course there is.""

He accepted the bitterness without protest.

"Christopher knew about Daniel's relationship with Olivia.""

Olivia looked up sharply.

"What?""

Michael nodded.

"He found messages on Daniel's phone months before the accident. He confronted him about it. Daniel told him it was none of his business.""

Olivia's face went pale.

"Christopher knew about us?""

"He knew Daniel was seeing someone. I don't know whether he knew you were pregnant.""

I looked at Michael.

"Why would that matter?""

"Because Christopher was going to tell you what Daniel was doing. He told me he wanted to protect you.""

I felt a painful knot form in my chest.

A man I barely remembered had apparently tried to expose my husband's lies, while the man I trusted had been working to silence him.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

He answered and listened.

His expression changed.

"Where?"" he asked.

A pause.

"Are you certain?""

He stood.

"Thank you. Don't approach the vehicle.""

He ended the call and turned toward us.

"Someone has been following you.""

Jessica went pale.

"Who?""

"A security camera near Olivia's building captured a black SUV leaving shortly after your car. The plate is registered to a company associated with Ryan.""

Olivia pulled Noah closer.

"What do we do?""

Marcus walked to the desk and opened a drawer.

"First, nobody leaves alone. Second, we contact the investigators. Third, we retrieve the recording as soon as we can do so safely.""

He looked at Michael.

"Do you have anything that proves the recording still exists?""

Michael reached into his coat and produced an old photograph.

It showed a small storage unit with a faded number painted above the door.

On the back, someone had written a combination of numbers.

Marcus examined it.

"Good. We'll arrange transport to Nashville with an investigator.""

I felt a brief surge of relief.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel's name appeared on the screen.

I almost declined the call.

Instead, I answered and put it on speaker.

"Sarah," Daniel said, sounding calm now.

"I want to make this right.""

I said nothing.

"I know you're angry. You have every right to be. But Michael has never told you the whole truth.""

"Then tell me something I don't know.""

He sighed.

"Christopher wasn't innocent.""

Michael stepped toward the phone.

"Don't you dare.""

Daniel ignored him.

"Christopher was planning to expose the financial scheme, yes. But he also knew about the money Michael had stolen before he disappeared.""

Michael's jaw tightened.

Daniel continued.

"He was trying to blackmail us. He wanted money in exchange for his silence.""

"You're lying," Michael said.

"Am I? Ask him about the accounts in Switzerland. Ask him what happened to the money he transferred before the accident.""

I stared at Michael.

He looked furious.

But beneath the anger, I saw something else.

Shame.

"Is it true?"" I asked.

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Daniel laughed softly through the speaker.

"See? That's what I thought.""

I felt my stomach sink.

"Michael?""

He finally looked at me.

"I transferred money out of the company before the accident. I believed Daniel was going to frame me, and I wanted to make sure I had enough to survive while I proved my innocence.""

"How much?""

He lowered his eyes.

"Enough to make me look guilty.""

"Did you steal it?""

"No. But I can't prove that yet.""

Daniel's voice grew sharper.

"He's been lying to you from the beginning, Sarah. He disappeared. He let you mourn him. And now he's using you to get revenge.""

I gripped the phone.

"Why are you calling me?""

A pause.

Then Daniel said, "Because the recording Michael has isn't the only recording from that night.""

Michael went completely still.

Daniel continued.

"There's another one. And when you hear it, you'll understand why Christopher died.""

The call ended.

I stared at the dark screen.

Marcus immediately began making notes.

Jessica whispered, "What if Daniel is telling the truth?""

Michael looked at me, his face drawn and exhausted.

Then he spoke in a voice so quiet I almost didn't hear him.

"The second recording could destroy me.""

I waited.

"What does it contain?""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Christopher's last words.""

He opened them again.

May you like

"And he wasn't talking to Daniel.""

He was talking to me.
