Chapter 8: The Passenger Nobody Remembered
Michael sat down heavily.
I remained standing.
"Who else was in the car?""
He rubbed his hands over his face.
"I don't know for certain.""
"You just told Daniel to tell the truth. Now tell me yours.""
He looked up.
"After the accident, I received a photograph from an anonymous number. It showed Christopher's car shortly before the crash. There was someone in the passenger seat.""
"Who?""
"I couldn't identify the person. The photograph was taken from a distance, and the face was hidden by the window frame.""
"Then how do you know there was someone else?""
"Because the passenger's door was open in the photograph taken by the first officer at the scene. The police report said the door had been forced open by the impact, but the hinges weren't damaged.""
Jessica frowned.
"You're saying someone might have escaped?""
Michael nodded.
"Or someone might have been removed before the investigators arrived.""
I looked toward the window.
The black SUV was gone.
For the first time since Michael appeared, I realized how vulnerable we were. We had no idea who Daniel trusted, how far Ryan's influence reached, or whether anyone outside this apartment knew what had happened.
I turned to Olivia.
"Pack a bag for Noah.""
She looked frightened.
"Where are we going?""
"Somewhere Daniel doesn't know about.""
Michael shook his head.
"Don't go anywhere until we contact my lawyer.""
"Your lawyer can wait. Noah can't.""
Olivia held her baby tighter.
"Sarah, I don't expect you to forgive me, but please don't take him away from me.""
I stared at her.
"I'm not trying to take your baby. I'm trying to keep him safe from the people who turned his birth into a legal scheme.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know.""
For the first time that night, she didn't try to defend herself.
She simply looked exhausted.
"I was lonely," she whispered.
"Daniel made me feel like I mattered. He told me you had already moved on from Michael, that you married him because you couldn't bear being alone.""
I felt a sharp ache in my chest.
"He said that to you?""
Olivia nodded.
"He told me your marriage was already over before it began. He said you knew he wasn't faithful, and that you stayed because you wanted financial security.""
I almost laughed.
Daniel had spent years telling me that Olivia was impulsive, selfish, and jealous of my life.
Apparently, he had been telling her that I was cold, calculating, and impossible to love.
He had built a different villain for each of us.
And we had believed him.
"Did he tell you he loved you?"" I asked.
Olivia closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
"Did he promise to leave me?""
"Yes.""
"Did he tell you he would raise Noah with you?""
She nodded again.
I turned away before my anger could become something I couldn't control.
Michael stood.
"We need to see the original accident report.""
"Why?""
"Because Daniel's warning wasn't random. He knows I kept something from him.""
"What?""
Michael hesitated.
Then he removed a small key from his pocket.
"Before I disappeared, I made a copy of a recording. It was stored on a digital recorder I hid in Christopher's car.""
"What's on it?""
"Daniel and Ryan discussing the accident.""
My heart pounded.
"Where is it?""
"In a storage unit outside Nashville. I haven't been back since I returned to the country.""
"Then we go there.""
Michael shook his head.
"It's too dangerous to drive straight there. Daniel may be watching the roads.""
Jessica lifted her phone.
"I know someone who can help.""
She scrolled through her contacts and called a number.
A man answered after two rings.
"Jessica?""
"Marcus, I need a favor. A serious one.""
She explained only that we needed a safe place and help contacting a lawyer.
When she finished, she listened for a moment, then nodded.
"Thank you. We'll be there in twenty minutes.""
She ended the call.
"Marcus is a former detective. He left the department after reporting misconduct by a supervisor. He knows how to preserve evidence and get it to the right people.""
Michael looked relieved.
"Good.""
I glanced at the clock.
It was nearly midnight.
Less than four hours earlier, I had been sitting at a dinner table, watching another woman touch my husband while thirty guests laughed.
Now I was preparing to leave town with my supposedly dead first husband, my frightened sister, and a baby whose existence had exposed a criminal conspiracy.
I wondered how much stranger the night could become.
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.
I answered cautiously.
"Hello?""
A woman spoke in a low, urgent voice.
"Is this Sarah Bennett?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Elaine Porter. I was the nurse on duty at the hospital where Michael was treated after the accident.""
I looked at Michael.
His face went rigid.
Elaine continued.
"I've been trying to find you for years. I saw the news about your husband's death, and I knew the identification was wrong.""
My throat tightened.
"What do you mean?""
"Michael was brought to the hospital alive. He had serious injuries, but he survived. Someone came to his room two days later and arranged for his records to be sealed.""
"Who?""
She paused.
"Daniel Bennett.""
Michael closed his eyes.
I gripped the phone.
"Why are you calling now?""
"Because I received a letter this morning. It contained a photograph of my house and a note telling me to stop talking about the accident.""
"Do you still have the records?""
"Yes. I kept copies before they were sealed.""
My heart raced.
"Can you give them to us?""
"Not over the phone. Meet me tomorrow morning at the old courthouse in Nashville.""
I hesitated.
"How do I know I can trust you?""
"You don't," she said.
"But I can prove Michael was alive when Daniel told everyone he was dead.""
She ended the call.
For a moment, I stood motionless.
Then Michael reached for my hand.
"Sarah, I'm sorry.""
I pulled away gently.
"Don't apologize yet. I still have eleven years of questions.""
He nodded.
"You deserve every answer.""
We gathered our belongings and prepared to leave.
Before stepping outside, I checked my phone one last time.
A new message had arrived from Ryan.
*Ryan:* You need to stop listening to Michael. He isn't the victim you think he is.
A second message followed.
*Ryan:* Ask him what he did to Christopher before the accident.
I looked up at Michael.
He saw the message over my shoulder.
The blood drained from his face.
"Sarah," he said quietly, "there's something I haven't told you about my brother.""
I waited.
Michael swallowed.
"Christopher didn't just die in that car.""
May you like
He looked toward Noah's bassinet.
"He was trying to save someone.""
