Chapter 6: The Brother Daniel Buried in My Place
I stared at Michael, unable to process the words.
“Daniel's brother?””
Michael nodded.
“His name was Christopher. He and Daniel looked almost identical. They were twins.””
I remembered Daniel mentioning an older brother once, years ago, but only in passing. He had said Christopher moved away after a family dispute and that they no longer spoke.
When I asked why, Daniel had changed the subject.
Now I understood why.
“You're telling me Daniel's brother died in the accident everyone believed killed you?””
“Yes.””
“And you let me believe you were dead?””
Michael looked down.
“I didn't have a choice.””
“Everyone has a choice.””
His shoulders sagged.
“You're right.””
The admission startled me more than any excuse could have.
He pulled out a chair but didn't sit until I nodded toward it.
Olivia stood near the kitchen, holding Noah against her shoulder. Jessica remained beside the bassinet, watching Michael as if she expected him to disappear.
I sat across from him.
“Start at the beginning.””
Michael rubbed his palms together.
“Eleven years ago, Daniel came to me with a business proposal. He said he had a way to make a lot of money, but he needed someone who could travel without attracting attention.””
“What kind of business?””
“Financial fraud. He was moving money through shell companies, using legitimate accounts to disguise where it came from.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why would you help him?””
“I didn't know what he was doing at first. He told me the company was struggling and that he needed help restructuring its finances. By the time I realized the truth, I had already signed documents that made it look as though I was responsible.””
I remembered the final months of my marriage to Michael.
He had become distant. He took calls outside and started traveling more frequently. When I asked him about it, he told me he was working late to secure our future.
I had believed him.
Then he disappeared into the wreckage of a burning car.
“What happened the night of the accident?”” I asked.
Michael stared at the table.
“I was supposed to meet Daniel on a highway outside Nashville. He said he had documents proving I had been stealing money from the company. He promised he would help me clear my name if I signed an agreement transferring certain assets.””
“And you went?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought he was my brother.””
His voice cracked.
“I got there and realized Christopher was in the car. Daniel had convinced him to drive my vehicle while wearing my coat. They knew the police would identify the car through its registration and assume I had been inside.””
I pressed my fingers against my lips.
“You're saying they planned your death?””
Michael nodded slowly.
“Daniel wanted me gone. Christopher thought it was a way to help his brother escape the investigation. He believed the plan was only to make me disappear for a few months.””
“And then the car crashed?””
Michael closed his eyes.
“The brakes failed. Christopher died in the fire.””
I felt cold all over.
“Did Daniel know?””
“I believe he suspected Christopher might not survive. But I can't prove he intended for his brother to die.””
“Why didn't you come back?””
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“Because Daniel had evidence that made it look as though I had orchestrated the fraud. He threatened to give it to the police if I surfaced. He told me you would be investigated as my wife, that your accounts would be frozen, and that you could lose everything.””
I shook my head.
“So you left me alone to grieve.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“You let me marry your brother.””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
The word hung between us.
I stood and walked to the window, trying to steady myself.
Daniel had not simply betrayed me.
He had built our marriage on the ruins of my first one.
He had comforted me while knowing that Michael was alive. He had watched me mourn a man whose death had helped him conceal his own crimes.
And now Michael was standing in my sister's apartment, holding documents that connected all of them.
I turned around.
“Why are you here now?””
Michael looked at Olivia.
“Because of Noah.””
She tightened her arms around the baby.
“Michael, please.””
He shook his head.
“You deserve to know the truth, Sarah.””
I looked at the child.
“Tell me.””
Michael drew a breath.
“Olivia contacted me six months ago. She had discovered that Daniel was using a fertility clinic to obtain donor records. She was frightened because she had started to suspect he was hiding financial crimes behind the paperwork.””
Olivia stared at him.
“You said you wouldn't tell her about that.””
“I said I would tell her when it was safe.””
“It's not safe now!””
“It's never going to be safe if we keep lying.””
He turned back to me.
“Daniel knew I was alive. He found me through an old financial contact and offered me money to stay hidden. In exchange, he wanted me to sign a document giving up any claim to certain assets connected to my family.””
I frowned.
“What assets?””
Michael reached into his coat again and placed a second envelope on the table.
“Your first husband's estate,” he said.
“The money and property my parents left me. Everything passed to you when I was declared dead.””
I stared at the envelope.
“I never received anything.””
“Because Daniel intercepted the estate notices. He used your signature to redirect the funds into accounts he controlled.””
The room seemed to grow smaller.
I opened the envelope.
Inside were bank statements, property records, and copies of letters addressed to me. Several had been stamped as delivered, but the signatures acknowledging receipt were not mine.
There was also a recent document bearing Daniel's name.
A transfer authorization.
The date was only three weeks old.
I looked at Michael.
“He's still moving the money?””
“Yes. And I believe he's preparing to transfer the remaining assets overseas.””
Olivia began to cry again.
“He told me it was for Noah. He said we needed to leave the country before anyone discovered what he'd done.””
I turned toward her.
“And you believed him?””
“I wanted to believe him.””
“Even after he lied to you about his marriage?””
She lowered her head.
I had no sympathy left to offer her. Not yet.
But I could see the terror in her face, and I understood that Daniel had trapped her with the same weapon he had used on me: the promise that his lies were protecting someone we loved.
Michael slid another sheet across the table.
“This is why I came tonight. Daniel has been contacting lawyers, preparing documents, and trying to establish a legal arrangement that would keep you away from the money if the fraud came to light.””
I looked at the signature on the page.
Mine.
Again.
But this time, the document wasn't about guardianship.
It was a declaration stating that I had known Michael was alive and had willingly assisted him in concealing his identity.
My stomach lurched.
“He's planning to make me the criminal.””
Michael nodded.
“If the investigation begins, he intends to claim you helped him hide assets and evade the authorities.””
Jessica covered her mouth.
Olivia whispered, “Oh, my God.””
I stared at the document, then at the man who had once been my husband and the woman who was still my sister.
For eleven years, Daniel had made me feel as though I was lucky he had chosen me.
Now I understood why he had worked so hard to keep me uncertain, dependent, and ashamed of asking questions.
A woman who doubted herself was easier to control.
My phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel appeared on the screen.
*Daniel:* I know you're with Michael. Bring him to my house tonight, and I'll explain everything.
Another message followed.
*Daniel:* If you involve the police, Olivia loses Noah. You lose your marriage, your money, and whatever reputation you have left.
I read the words twice.
Then a third message arrived.
*Daniel:* You have one hour to decide whose side you're on.
I looked at Michael.
He had gone pale.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He pointed to the final page in the envelope.
A line near the bottom listed the name of the attorney who had prepared the false declaration.
I recognized it.
The same attorney had handled Daniel's business affairs for years.
But beneath the attorney's name was a second signature, authorizing the transfer of the estate funds.
It belonged to someone I never expected to see involved.
*Ryan Hart.*
Megan's husband.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
Jessica whispered, “Sarah, that's impossible.””
Michael shook his head.
“No. It's worse than that.””
He leaned forward and lowered his voice.
“Ryan isn't just helping Daniel move the money.””
May you like
He glanced toward Noah's bassinet.
“Ryan is the man who arranged the original accident.””
