Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Accident

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Ryan Hart had spent the evening pretending to be a humiliated husband, watching Megan flirt with Daniel while staring into his wineglass. He had looked like a man trapped in an unhappy marriage.

Now Michael was telling me that Ryan had helped arrange the accident that supposedly killed him.

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Explain what you mean," I demanded.

Michael looked at the documents spread between us.

"Ryan handled the financial transfers for Daniel's company. He arranged the accounts, moved the money, and made sure the paperwork pointed toward me when the investigation began.""

"That doesn't prove he arranged a murder.""

"No," Michael admitted.

"But it proves he helped cover up what happened.""

I looked at the signature again.

Ryan's name was written in the same neat handwriting I had seen on the place cards at Megan's dinner.

"Why would Ryan help Daniel kill his own brother?""

"Because Christopher wasn't supposed to be in that car," Michael said.

"He was supposed to be driving you out of the country under your identity.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

"Daniel had arranged a way for me to disappear. Christopher was going to take the car and leave the state. Ryan was supposed to make the financial records suggest that I had fled after stealing the money.""

Michael swallowed.

"But something went wrong. Christopher took the wrong vehicle, and the brakes failed before he reached the meeting point.""

Olivia pressed Noah against her chest.

"Daniel told me Christopher's death was an accident," she whispered.

Michael nodded grimly.

"He told everyone what they needed to hear.""

I thought about the years I had spent mourning Michael. The sympathy cards. The casseroles delivered by neighbors. The nights Daniel held me while I cried.

Had he comforted me because he loved me?

Or because my grief made it easier to control what I believed?

My phone buzzed again.

*Daniel:* One hour, Sarah. Don't make me come looking for you.

I showed the message to Michael.

He read it, then shook his head.

"He's getting desperate.""

"Why?""

"Because I have the original records.""

He tapped the envelope.

"These are copies. The originals are in a safe deposit box. If anything happens to me, a lawyer has instructions to release them.""

"Which lawyer?""

"Someone Daniel doesn't know.""

"Can we contact the police?""

"Yes, but not until we know what Ryan is planning. He has connections in the county, and if he's involved in the original investigation, he may have friends who can warn Daniel.""

I hated that his reasoning made sense.

For eleven years, I had believed the worst thing a husband could do was betray his wife.

Now I was sitting in my sister's apartment, learning that my husband might have built an entire life around fraud, intimidation, and a staged death.

And I still didn't know how much of Michael's story was true.

I looked at Olivia.

"Did you know Michael was alive when you signed the donor agreement?""

She shook her head quickly.

"No. I thought he was dead. Daniel told me the clinic had preserved his genetic material before the accident.""

"Then why did you tell Daniel he wasn't the legal father?""

Olivia looked down at Noah.

"Because the donor agreement wasn't the only document I signed.""

She walked to the desk and removed another folder.

Inside was a private DNA report.

The first page listed Noah's genetic profile. The second compared it with a sample attributed to Michael Reed.

The conclusion was unmistakable.

Michael was Noah's biological father.

I looked up sharply.

"How is that possible?""

Michael stared at the report.

"I donated genetic material years ago. But I never agreed to this arrangement.""

Olivia's voice trembled.

"Daniel told me the clinic had permission. He said Michael had signed everything before he died.""

Michael turned toward her.

"Olivia, I never gave Daniel permission to use my samples.""

She began to cry.

"Then he lied to me too.""

I couldn't decide which was worse: that Daniel had betrayed me with my sister, or that he had somehow manipulated both of us into participating in a scheme neither of us fully understood.

Jessica stepped forward.

"We need to get out of here.""

Michael nodded.

"She's right. Daniel knows where Olivia lives.""

As if summoned by the words, a car door slammed outside.

Olivia froze.

Someone was walking up the stairs.

Three hard knocks struck the apartment door.

"Olivia!"" Daniel called.

"Open the door.""

Noah began crying.

Olivia rushed to the bassinet and lifted him.

Daniel knocked again.

"I know Sarah is in there. Open up.""

Michael moved toward the kitchen.

Jessica pulled out her phone.

I stepped toward the door.

Michael caught my wrist.

"Don't.""

"What if he breaks it down?""

"Then we call the police.""

Daniel's voice grew louder.

"Sarah, I know you're listening. You have no idea what you're doing.""

I looked at the door.

For years, that voice had been enough to make me second-guess myself.

Not anymore.

I unlocked the deadbolt but kept the chain in place.

Daniel stood in the hallway, his face flushed and his tie hanging loose around his neck.

His eyes immediately found Michael.

"You should have stayed dead," Daniel said.

The words were quiet.

But they destroyed any remaining hope I had that this was all some terrible misunderstanding.

Michael stepped into view behind me.

"You should have told the truth.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"After everything I did for you?""

"You let me believe my wife would never know I was alive.""

"You abandoned her!""

"And you married her.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Because somebody had to take care of her.""

I slapped him through the narrow opening before I could stop myself.

His head jerked sideways.

For a moment, we stared at each other.

Then Daniel looked directly at me.

"You're making a very dangerous mistake.""

I held the door steady.

"No, Daniel. I'm finally correcting one.""

He took a step back.

Then he smiled.

It wasn't the familiar smile he used at dinner parties.

It was colder.

"Ask Michael what happened to the evidence from the night Christopher died," he said.

He looked over my shoulder at Michael.

"Ask him why he waited eleven years to tell you the truth.""

Then he turned and walked down the stairs.

I shut the door and locked it.

Michael looked as though someone had punched him.

"What does he mean?"" I asked.

He didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

"Michael, what evidence?""

He stared at the DNA report in Olivia's hands.

May you like

Then he whispered something that made the room go silent.

"Christopher wasn't the only person in that car.""
