Chapter 12: The Girl Who Called Another Woman Mom

I spent the drive to the Harts' neighborhood staring at Emily's photograph.

The girl in the picture looked about ten years old. She wore a yellow sweatshirt and held a basketball beneath one arm.

She had my eyes.

My birthmark.

And the smile I had seen in the mirror when I was her age.

Detective Brooks had arranged for two investigators to accompany us. Michael followed in another vehicle, while Jessica stayed with Olivia and Noah at the secure office.

I hadn't spoken to Daniel since the night of the anniversary dinner.

He had called seventeen times.

I hadn't answered once.

When we turned onto the Harts' street, I recognized the neighborhood immediately. The houses stood behind trimmed hedges, and children's bicycles lay scattered across driveways.

It was the kind of place where people waved to their neighbors and trusted that the worst thing happening behind closed doors was an argument about money.

I had once attended a barbecue at the Harts' home.

Megan had shown me around the upstairs bedrooms and pointed out the room she said she hoped would someday become a nursery.

Ryan had smiled and told me they were taking their time.

I remembered thinking they would make wonderful parents.

Now I wondered whether they had been planning to raise my child all along.

Detective Brooks knocked on the front door.

Ryan answered.

He was wearing jeans and a gray sweater, his hair slightly disheveled. For a moment, he looked like the same man who had sat silently through Megan's anniversary dinner.

Then he saw me.

His expression changed.

"Sarah.""

"Where is my daughter?""

He looked past me toward the investigators.

"I think you should come inside.""

"No. Tell me where she is.""

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

"Emily is at school.""

"Does she know who I am?""

He didn't answer.

I stepped forward.

"Does she know?""

Ryan moved aside, allowing us to enter.

The living room was neat, with framed family photographs arranged along the fireplace. I saw Megan holding a toddler at the beach, Ryan kneeling beside a little girl on her first day of school, and a Christmas portrait of all three of them wearing matching sweaters.

In one photograph, Emily sat on Ryan's shoulders while Megan laughed beside them.

They looked like a happy family.

My daughter had grown up calling another woman Mom.

I gripped the back of a chair to keep myself steady.

Ryan stood near the fireplace.

"Megan and I didn't know the full circumstances when Emily came to us.""

"Then explain them.""

He looked toward Detective Brooks.

She nodded.

"Go ahead.""

Ryan took a deep breath.

"Eleven years ago, Dr. Pierce contacted Megan. He said a newborn needed a stable home because the biological mother was unable to care for her.""

I stared at him.

"That was a lie.""

"I know that now.""

"Did you ever meet me?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"At the hospital. You were sedated. Daniel told us you had signed a consent form allowing the baby to be placed with another family.""

I felt physically sick.

"And you believed him?""

Ryan lowered his head.

"Megan wanted a child desperately. We'd been trying for years, and we'd experienced two miscarriages. When Dr. Pierce offered us the opportunity to adopt, we thought it was a miracle.""

"A miracle built on my stolen daughter.""

He flinched.

"Yes.""

"Did you know Daniel was my husband?""

"Yes.""

"Did you know he was the baby's biological father?""

Ryan shook his head.

"We were told the father was unknown.""

"Did you know my first husband was listed as a donor?""

His expression changed.

"No.""

Detective Brooks opened her folder.

"Mr. Hart, did you sign any documents relating to the child's placement?""

"Yes.""

"Did you make any payments?""

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

"We paid medical expenses and legal fees.""

"To whom?""

"Dr. Pierce's private foundation.""

"How much?""

He swallowed.

"About forty thousand dollars over several months.""

I stared at him.

"You bought my daughter?""

"No!"" He sounded genuinely horrified.

"We were told the money covered medical care, legal processing, and the child's expenses.""

I wanted to believe he hadn't known.

But when I looked at the family photographs, all I could see was the life that had been taken from me.

A door opened upstairs.

Megan appeared at the top of the staircase.

She wore a white blouse and black trousers, her face pale and drawn.

When she saw me, she gripped the railing.

"Sarah.""

I looked up at her.

"Where is my daughter?""

Megan began crying.

"Please don't do this in front of Emily.""

The words struck me harder than she could have imagined.

Emily.

She had a name.

A birthday.

Favorite foods, school friends, and probably a favorite song she sang in the shower.

She had grown up in a house where her parents had hidden the truth about her birth.

And I had spent eleven years mourning her.

"How long have you known?"" I asked.

Megan came down the stairs slowly.

"I suspected something was wrong when the adoption documents were delayed. But Ryan said Dr. Pierce was handling everything legally.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She stopped in front of me.

"Three years.""

My chest tightened.

"Three years?""

"Daniel contacted me. He told me Emily was your daughter. He said he was trying to protect you from the truth.""

I stared at her.

"And you kept raising her without telling me?""

Megan wiped her cheeks.

"I love her.""

"So do I.""

"I know.""

"No, you don't. You have no idea what it feels like to believe your child is dead and then discover she's been sleeping upstairs in a house where you once had dinner.""

Megan covered her mouth.

Ryan turned away.

For a moment, I thought she might finally admit everything.

Instead, she said, "Daniel told me you never wanted to be a mother again after the loss.""

I felt a wave of fury.

"He told me my daughter had died.""

Megan began sobbing.

"I thought I was protecting Emily.""

"From what? The truth?""

She couldn't answer.

Detective Brooks stepped between us.

"Mrs. Hart, we need the original adoption records, all communications with Dr. Pierce, and every message you've received from Daniel concerning this child.""

Megan nodded shakily.

Then she looked at me.

"There's something else you should know.""

I waited.

"Daniel didn't just arrange Emily's placement. He made us promise that if you ever discovered the truth, we would tell you that you had voluntarily given her up.""

My stomach turned.

"And if we refused," Ryan added quietly, "he threatened to expose financial records that could send me to prison.""

I stared at him.

"That's why you helped him with the money.""

Ryan nodded.

"I was trying to protect my family.""

"Which family, Ryan? The one you built with Megan, or the one Daniel was destroying?""

He had no answer.

Footsteps sounded upstairs.

A young voice called, "Mom? Who's here?""

Megan went rigid.

Emily appeared on the staircase wearing a school uniform and carrying a backpack.

She looked down at us with curious eyes.

"Why are there police officers in our house?""

Megan wiped her face quickly.

"Sweetheart, come downstairs.""

Emily hesitated.

Then her gaze settled on me.

Something in her expression changed.

She stared at my face, then touched the small crescent-shaped mark beneath her left ear.

I felt my own hand rise instinctively to the same spot.

Emily noticed.

"Mom," she whispered, "why does that lady have the same birthmark as me?""

Nobody spoke.

I wanted to run to her.

I wanted to hold her and tell her I had never stopped loving her, even when I believed she was gone.

But she was a frightened child standing between the only parents she had ever known and a stranger whose face somehow looked like her own.

I forced myself to remain still.

Megan walked toward her.

"Emily, honey, there's something we need to explain.""

Emily stepped backward.

"Did I do something wrong?""

My heart shattered.

"No," I said immediately.

"You haven't done anything wrong.""

She looked at me.

"Then why are you crying?""

I hadn't realized tears were running down my face.

I wiped them away.

"Because I've been looking for someone for a very long time.""

Emily glanced at Megan.

"Who?""

I took a trembling breath.

"You.""

She stared at me, confused.

Then Ryan's phone rang.

He checked the screen and went completely pale.

Detective Brooks held out her hand.

"Let me see that.""

Ryan turned the phone toward her.

The message was from Daniel.

*Daniel:* If Sarah has reached Emily, don't let her leave the house with the child. The custody agreement is still valid, and I have the original document proving Sarah surrendered all parental rights.

A second message appeared.

*Daniel:* If she refuses to cooperate, tell her what happened to Christopher. She deserves to know why he really died.

Detective Brooks looked at Ryan.

"Where is the original agreement?""

Ryan swallowed hard.

Then he pointed toward the staircase.

"Upstairs. In Emily's bedroom.""

I stared at him.

"Why would you keep a legal document surrendering my rights in my daughter's bedroom?""

Ryan's eyes filled with tears.

"Because Daniel told us it was the only way to keep her safe.""

From upstairs, Emily called out again.

"Mom? What's going on?""

Megan looked toward the staircase, then back at me.

And in that moment, I understood the cruelest part of Daniel's scheme.

May you like

He hadn't merely stolen eleven years of my daughter's life.

He had made the people raising her believe that loving her meant keeping me away.
