Chapter 2: The Baby My Husband Never Told Me About
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the blood pounding in my ears.
Daniel holding a newborn.
Olivia standing beside him.
Eight months.
My younger sister had called me every Sunday for the past year. She had asked about my marriage, my work, and the house Daniel and I had been renovating.
She had even cried with me when I told her we were struggling to have a child.
And all that time, she had been carrying his baby.
"Where did you get this?"" I asked.
Jessica lowered her phone.
"Olivia posted it privately. She thought only a few people could see it.""
"Why would you have access to her account?""
"She added me months ago. We were helping organize a baby shower.""
I stared at her.
"A baby shower?""
Jessica nodded miserably.
"Megan told everyone the baby belonged to a cousin of Ryan's. She said Olivia was helping the family through a difficult situation.""
I felt something inside me go very still.
"So everyone knew?""
"Not everyone. Some people believed her. Others suspected something was wrong.""
"And you waited eight months to tell me?""
Jessica flinched.
"I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
She looked through the glass doors again.
"Of what Daniel would do if he knew I had proof.""
My mouth went dry.
"Proof of what, Jessica? That my husband had an affair with my sister?""
"That, and something else.""
She swiped across her screen.
A second photograph appeared.
Daniel stood beside Olivia in a hospital corridor. His hand rested protectively on her shoulder. In the background, Megan stood near a vending machine, holding a folder.
On the folder was the logo of a family law firm.
"What is that?"" I whispered.
"Documents," Jessica said.
"Megan helped Olivia find a lawyer before the baby was born.""
"Why would Olivia need a lawyer?""
Jessica looked at me with an expression I couldn't bear.
"Because Daniel told her he was going to leave you.""
The words landed harder than a slap.
For eleven years, Daniel had told me we were building a life together. We had a house, shared savings, holiday traditions, and a list of places we planned to visit when we finally had more time.
He had held my hand at my mother's funeral.
He had promised we would grow old together.
And apparently, while making those promises, he had been preparing another life with my sister.
"Does Ryan know?"" I asked.
"Not everything.""
"Then what does he know?""
Jessica hesitated.
"He knows Daniel lied about visiting their house. He knows Megan has been protecting him. But I don't think he knows about the baby.""
"Why didn't you tell him?""
"Because Megan told me she would destroy my marriage if I interfered.""
I stared at her.
"You're married to nobody here. Why would she have that kind of power?""
Jessica looked away.
"Because she knows things about people. Things they told her in confidence. She keeps messages.
Photographs. Secrets.""
A cold breeze swept across the patio.
Behind us, the dinner party had erupted into overlapping voices.
Ryan was shouting now.
Daniel's voice rose in response.
Then a glass shattered.
Jessica gripped my arm.
"We need to go.""
"No.""
"Sarah—"
"I'm not running away from my own husband.""
I turned toward the doors.
Jessica caught my sleeve.
"Please listen. Daniel doesn't know I have the hospital photograph. If you confront him without knowing what he has planned, he'll twist everything until you're the one apologizing.""
I wanted to tell her she was wrong.
I wanted to believe that eleven years of marriage meant Daniel would at least have the courage to tell me the truth.
But then I remembered his expression when Ryan asked about the visits.
He hadn't looked confused.
He had looked caught.
I walked back into the dining room.
The atmosphere had changed completely.
Guests stood in small groups, whispering. Megan was gathering plates with frantic movements, as though cleaning up dinner could somehow erase what had happened.
Daniel stood near the fireplace.
The moment he saw me, he straightened his jacket.
"Sarah. Thank God. Let's go home.""
I stopped several feet away.
"Who is the baby?""
His jaw tightened.
"What?""
"The baby in the hospital photograph. The one you're holding with Olivia.""
Megan dropped a plate.
It struck the floor and broke into three large pieces.
Ryan turned toward her.
"Olivia?"" he repeated.
"Your sister is involved in this?""
Daniel took a step toward me.
"Sarah, I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
He looked around at the guests.
"Not here.""
"Why? You had no problem making me look ridiculous in front of everyone ten minutes ago.""
"That's not what I was doing.""
"Then tell me whose baby you're holding.""
His mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Megan rushed between us.
"Sarah, you're making a mistake. This is a complicated family situation.""
I looked at her.
"You were sitting on my husband five minutes ago. Don't pretend we're discussing family boundaries.""
Her cheeks flushed.
"Daniel was helping Olivia. That's all.""
"Helping her do what?""
"She needed support.""
"From my husband?""
"Yes!""
Her answer came too quickly.
Ryan stared at his wife.
"Why didn't you tell me Olivia was pregnant?""
Megan turned toward him.
"Because it wasn't my story to tell.""
"Yet you apparently knew enough to arrange lawyers.""
Her expression changed.
For the first time, Megan looked less like a confident hostess and more like someone trapped in a room with no unlocked doors.
Daniel reached for my hand.
"Please, Sarah. We need to talk privately.""
I stepped away.
"Did you sleep with my sister?""
Silence swallowed the room.
Daniel looked at the floor.
That was answer enough.
I felt the sting of tears, but I refused to let them fall in front of the people who had watched him humiliate me.
"How long?"" I asked.
"Sarah—"
"How long?""
He rubbed his forehead.
"It wasn't supposed to happen.""
I laughed once, without humor.
"That's not an answer.""
"It started last year.""
Last year.
He had kissed me at midnight on New Year's Eve while already betraying me.
He had celebrated our eleventh anniversary with flowers while my sister carried his child.
I stared at him.
"Does Olivia know you told me you wanted to start a family?""
His eyes flickered.
"Please don't bring that into this.""
"Does she know?""
"Yes.""
The room seemed to tilt.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"I love you, Sarah. Whatever happened with Olivia, it doesn't change that.""
I couldn't believe he had said it.
"You love me?""
"Of course I do.""
"Then why did you build a second family behind my back?""
He looked toward Megan.
It was brief, barely a second.
But I saw it.
He wasn't looking at her for comfort.
He was waiting for permission.
Megan gave the smallest shake of her head.
Daniel immediately fell silent.
My skin prickled.
"What aren't you telling me?"" I asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Ryan walked to the dining table, picked up a leather folder, and opened it.
Inside were printed emails, photographs, and several pages of financial records.
"I found these in Megan's office yesterday," he said.
"I thought they were related to some business arrangement she was hiding from me.""
He pulled out a photograph and placed it on the table.
It showed Daniel entering Megan and Ryan's house at eleven forty-seven on a Thursday night.
The date was eight months earlier.
The night Olivia had given birth.
Ryan looked at Daniel.
"You told me you hadn't been here in months.""
Daniel went pale.
Megan whispered, "Ryan, don't.""
But Ryan pulled out another page.
It was a hospital visitor log.
Beside Daniel's name, someone had written a second name in blue ink.
*Megan Hart.*
Ryan stared at his wife.
"You were at the hospital too?""
Megan began to cry.
And then Ryan turned the page, revealing a document that made Daniel lunge toward the table.
"Don't touch that!"" Daniel shouted.
But I had already seen the heading.
It wasn't a birth certificate.
It wasn't a hospital bill.
May you like
It was a signed agreement concerning parental rights.
And my name appeared on the final page.
