Chapter 3: The Signature I Never Gave
Daniel moved so quickly that Ryan barely had time to pull the folder away.
"Give me that," Daniel demanded.
Ryan held it against his chest.
"No.""
"Ryan, you have no idea what you're looking at.""
"Then explain it.""
Daniel glanced at me.
His expression softened, and for one terrible moment, he looked exactly like the man who used to bring me coffee in bed on Sunday mornings.
"Sarah, please. This isn't how you find out about something like this.""
I stared at him.
"Then how was I supposed to find out? From a Christmas card?""
He closed his eyes.
Megan stood near the fireplace, twisting a tissue between her fingers.
Ryan pointed at the document.
"Why does your wife's name appear on a parental rights agreement involving Olivia's baby?""
Daniel said nothing.
I stepped closer to the table.
"Let me see it.""
Ryan hesitated before handing me the papers.
The document was six pages long, filled with legal language I struggled to process. I read the heading twice, then scanned the final page.
There was Daniel's signature.
There was Olivia's.
And below them was my name.
Sarah Bennett.
The signature looked convincing at first glance.
The capital S curved the way mine did. The final stroke extended beneath the surname, just as it did when I signed birthday cards.
But I had never seen this document.
I had never agreed to anything involving Olivia's child.
My fingers began to tremble.
"What is this?""
Daniel stepped toward me.
"Sarah, listen to me.""
I held up the page.
"Did you sign my name?""
"No.""
"Then who did?""
He looked at Megan.
She shook her head frantically.
"Don't look at me," she whispered.
"You told me she knew.""
I turned toward her.
"Knew what?""
Megan pressed the tissue to her mouth.
Ryan's face hardened.
"You told me this was a business arrangement. You said you were helping Daniel protect a child from a difficult situation.""
"I was helping my friend!""
"By forging Sarah's signature?""
"I didn't forge anything!""
"Then why is her name here?""
Megan looked at Daniel.
He didn't come to her rescue.
For years, I had watched those two share private jokes, secret glances, and conversations that stopped the second I entered a room.
I had assumed they were simply close.
Now I wondered how many times they had been discussing a life in which I was the only person who didn't know the truth.
I turned back to Daniel.
"Explain the agreement.""
He lowered his voice.
"It was a precaution.""
"Against what?""
"Olivia was scared. She thought you'd hate her. She thought the baby would destroy your family.""
I stared at him.
"She had an affair with my husband. I think she understood the risk.""
"She didn't plan for it to happen.""
"Neither did I.""
He flinched.
For a moment, the room was so quiet I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
Then Daniel reached for the document.
"Give it to me. We can talk about this at home.""
I stepped back.
"Stop telling me to go home with you.""
His expression hardened.
"You're upset. You're not thinking clearly.""
"I'm thinking more clearly than I have in years.""
He pointed toward the guests.
"Do you really want everyone here to hear the details of our marriage?""
I looked around.
Thirty people had come to celebrate Megan and Ryan's anniversary.
Now they stood among overturned chairs and abandoned dessert plates, watching a marriage collapse in real time.
"You were comfortable humiliating me in front of them," I said.
"You can explain yourself in front of them too.""
Daniel's face reddened.
"This is private.""
"So was your affair. Apparently, privacy only matters when it protects you.""
Ryan gave a bitter laugh.
"She's got you there, Daniel.""
Megan spun toward him.
"Would you stop making this worse?""
Ryan stared at her.
"You sat on another woman's husband in front of thirty people. Then you screamed when she offered to do the same thing to me. You made it worse all by yourself.""
"That wasn't what it looked like.""
"Then tell me what it looked like!""
Megan opened her mouth, but no words came.
I looked down at the agreement again.
One paragraph had been highlighted in yellow.
It described a temporary guardianship arrangement intended to protect the child's welfare in the event that the biological parents became unable to provide care.
I read the names listed beneath the clause.
Daniel Bennett.
Olivia Bennett.
And Sarah Bennett.
My heart hammered.
"Why am I listed as a guardian?""
Daniel's voice became strangely gentle.
"Because you're good with children.""
I stared at him.
"That's your explanation?""
"You've always wanted to be a mother. Olivia knew you would love the baby.""
The cruelty of it took my breath away.
For years, Daniel and I had endured fertility appointments, blood tests, and long drives home in silence after doctors told us our chances were getting smaller.
He had held me while I cried into his shirt.
He had promised we would find another way to build a family.
All that time, he had been making a baby with my sister.
And now he was telling me that my grief made me a convenient candidate for raising their child.
"You thought I'd raise your affair baby?""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Don't call him that. He's an innocent child.""
"I know he's innocent.""
My voice cracked.
"That's why you should have protected him from your lies.""
Olivia's name appeared on my phone.
I hadn't even realized I was holding it.
A message lit the screen.
*Olivia:* Sarah, please don't believe everything you hear tonight. Daniel and I need to explain the arrangement before you make any decisions.
Another message arrived immediately.
*Olivia:* You have to understand why we chose you.
I read the words twice.
Why we chose you.
Not why this happened.
Not I'm sorry.
Why they chose me.
I looked at Daniel.
"Did Olivia know you were going to tell me?""
He swallowed.
"She knew we would have to talk eventually.""
"Eventually? The baby is eight months old!""
"I was trying to find the right time.""
"When? At his graduation?""
Daniel's face twisted.
"You're making this impossible.""
"No, Daniel. I'm asking questions you should have answered before you signed my name to anything.""
I turned toward Ryan.
"Can I take these documents?""
He nodded.
"Take them. I made copies this afternoon.""
Megan lunged forward.
"Ryan, those are private papers!""
He stepped between us.
"Then you should have kept them somewhere private.""
She stared at him as if she couldn't believe he had chosen my side.
I slipped the agreement into my handbag.
Jessica appeared beside me and quietly offered to drive me home.
I almost accepted.
Then I remembered her warning.
Don't go home with Daniel.
I looked at her.
"Did you know about the agreement?""
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me enough.
"Jessica?""
"I saw a draft," she admitted.
"I didn't know your signature was on the final version.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I thought Daniel was going to confess everything. Megan told me the baby was being placed with relatives, and that you already knew.""
I shook my head.
"Everyone seems to have a different version of what I knew.""
Jessica's eyes filled with tears.
"I'm sorry.""
I believed she was sorry.
But I wasn't ready to forgive anyone.
I walked toward the front door, leaving Daniel standing beside the ruined dinner table.
He followed me onto the porch.
"Sarah, don't leave like this.""
I turned around.
"What would you prefer? Should I kiss you goodbye and thank you for the evening?""
"That's not fair.""
"Neither was any of this.""
He lowered his voice.
"If you walk away now, you're going to make things much harder for everyone.""
"Everyone except you, apparently.""
His expression changed.
For the first time that night, the softness disappeared completely.
"You don't understand what you're getting yourself into.""
The words chilled me.
"What does that mean?""
He looked toward the house, where Megan stood behind the glass doors watching us.
Then he leaned closer.
"If you take those papers to a lawyer, you'll destroy more than my marriage.""
I held his gaze.
"Whose life are you really trying to protect, Daniel?""
He didn't answer.
Instead, he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Ask Olivia why she insisted your name be on that agreement. Ask her what she promised me in exchange.""
I stepped backward.
"What did she promise you?""
Daniel's phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen, and the color drained from his face.
The caller's name was *Olivia*.
He answered without taking his eyes off me.
"Not now," he whispered.
A woman's voice came through the speaker, frantic and unmistakable.
"Daniel, you need to tell Sarah the truth before she sees the other document.""
My stomach tightened.
"What other document?"" I demanded.
Daniel ended the call.
Too late.
May you like
I had already heard Olivia's next words before the line went dead.
"Because if she finds out who the baby's legal father really is, we're all finished.""
