Chapter 9: The Truth About Adrian

We found Vanessa in the parking garage.

Or rather, she allowed us to find her.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She stood beside a black car, holding the small case against her chest.

No panic.

No fear.

Almost like she had been waiting.

Adrian walked ahead.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him.

And smiled sadly.

Not the confident smile she used to wear.

Something different.

Regret.

“Adrian.””

The way she said his name made my stomach turn.

Because once, she said it like she owned him.

Now she said it like she was saying goodbye.

“What is in the case?””

Adrian asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

Not him.

Me.

“That depends.””

My father stepped forward.

“Depends on what?””

She smiled faintly.

“On whether Claire finally knows the truth.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What truth?””

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

“Tell her.””

He frowned.

“Tell her what?””

Her eyes hardened.

“You really don’t know?””

Nobody moved.

Vanessa laughed quietly.

“That’s almost sad.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Stop playing games.””

She looked at me.

“Claire, your husband didn’t meet you by accident.””

The world seemed to stop.

I stared at Adrian.

“What?””

His face changed.

“Vanessa, don’t.””

That was all I needed to hear.

Not denial.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Adrian.””

My voice was quiet.

“What is she talking about?””

He looked at me.

For the first time, I saw real fear in his eyes.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of losing power.

Fear of losing me.

“I can explain.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No, you can’t.””

She opened the case slightly.

Inside was a collection of documents.

My father immediately recognized them.

His face turned cold.

“Where did you get those?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“From Adrian.””

I looked at my husband.

“Adrian?””

He stepped back.

“I didn’t know what they were.””

“What does that mean?””

He swallowed.

“Three years ago, before we met, my company was failing.””

I listened.

Unable to move.

“Victor Hale approached me.””

My father’s expression darkened.

“He offered funding.””

Adrian nodded.

“I accepted.””

Vanessa continued.

“And part of that deal was simple.””

She looked at me.

“Get close to Claire Ellison.””

The parking garage became silent.

My heart felt like it had stopped.

I looked at Adrian.

“No.””

He shook his head immediately.

“No, Claire.””

“Is that true?””

“I didn’t know who you were.””

“But you were sent to find me?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

The truth didn’t need more words.

The man I thought had chosen me…

Had been placed in my path.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Claire, listen.””

I moved back.

“No.””

My voice broke.

Not from anger.

From disappointment.

“You don’t get to say you loved me when the beginning was a lie.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“It changed.””

“Did it?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

He had no answer.

Because maybe even he didn’t know.

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I was supposed to replace you.””

I looked at her.

“But you failed.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

A bitter smile appeared.

“Because somewhere along the way, Adrian actually fell in love with you.””

I looked at Adrian.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because a part of me believed her.

A part of me wanted to believe her.

Then my father took the documents from the case.

He scanned the first page.

And his expression changed.

“Claire.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed me the document.

At the bottom was a signature.

Adrian Mercer.

And beside it…

A second signature.

Someone else.

Someone who had been involved from the beginning.

My father whispered:

“This person wasn’t Victor Hale.””

I looked down.

And felt the ground disappear beneath me.

Because the name written beside Adrian’s signature was someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.

May you like

Someone who had been protecting me my entire life.

My father.
