Chapter 14: The Choice That Changed Everything

Ethan Cole was arrested before sunrise.

Not because he confessed.

Because the evidence was finally impossible to ignore.

Twenty-five years of hidden transactions.

Secret communications.

Manipulated investments.

Everything my mother had spent her final days uncovering.

But even with Ethan gone, something remained unresolved.

Adrian.

He stood outside Ellison Capital’s building, watching the sunrise.

For once, he wasn’t surrounded by cameras.

No employees.

No investors.

No people trying to impress him.

Just silence.

I found him there.

“You should be resting.””

He turned.

“I don’t think I deserve rest.””

I stopped beside him.

A year ago, I would have comforted him.

Today, I didn’t.

“I don’t know what happens next.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

The honesty surprised me.

He looked at the city.

“I spent years believing power was everything.””

He smiled sadly.

“I thought if I built something big enough, nobody could hurt me.””

I looked at him.

“And did it work?””

“No.””

A long silence followed.

“Claire.””

I looked away.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me.””

Good.

Because I couldn’t.

Not yet.

“I just want you to know something.””

“What?””

“The first day I met you…”

He paused.

“I forgot the plan.””

My expression didn’t change.

He continued.

“I forgot Ethan. I forgot Victor. I forgot Mercer Dynamics.””

His voice lowered.

“I just saw you.””

I looked at him.

“And that was real?””

“Yes.””

The answer came instantly.

That almost made it harder.

Because the worst betrayals were not always fake.

Sometimes they were real feelings born from wrong beginnings.

“I loved you.””

He swallowed.

“But I also hurt you.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He accepted it.

No excuses.

No defense.

That was new.

Then my father approached.

The moment changed.

Adrian looked at him.

“Mr. Ellison.””

My father studied him.

For a moment, I expected anger.

Instead, he said:

“You have a decision to make.””

Adrian frowned.

“What?””

“Mercer Dynamics is damaged.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“You can rebuild it.””

Adrian looked surprised.

“Why would you let me?””

My father looked at me.

Then back at him.

“Because destroying someone is easy.””

He paused.

“Seeing whether they can change is harder.””

Adrian lowered his head.

“I don’t deserve that chance.””

“No.””

My father agreed.

“You don’t.””

The answer was brutal.

But honest.

“You earn it.””

Adrian nodded.

For the first time, I saw him understand something.

Nobody was giving him anything.

Not anymore.

A week later, the world saw a different story.

Not the billionaire CEO who fell.

Not the secret heiress who revealed herself.

But the corruption that had existed behind both companies for decades.

Victor Hale and Ethan Cole faced criminal investigations.

Mercer Dynamics entered restructuring.

And I returned to Ellison Capital.

Not as Richard Ellison’s daughter.

But as myself.

Claire.

The woman I had hidden.

The woman I had forgotten.

One evening, I returned to the old house.

The same house where everything began.

The fireplace was repaired.

The room was empty.

No Vanessa.

No lies.

No fear.

Only memories.

I touched the place where the belt had struck me.

The scar was fading.

But I knew it would never disappear completely.

Then my phone rang.

Adrian.

I almost didn’t answer.

Almost.

“Hello?””

His voice was quiet.

“Claire.””

I waited.

“I found something.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

A pause.

“Something Ethan hid before he was arrested.””

My heart tightened.

“What kind of something?””

Adrian’s voice became serious.

“Something about your mother.””

I stood still.

“What about her?””

He whispered:

“She wasn’t investigating Victor because she discovered his crimes.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then why?””

May you like

His answer came softly.

“Because she discovered Victor was afraid of someone else.””
