Chapter 11: The Man Behind Everything

Victor Hale entered the conference room like he owned it.

That was the first thing I noticed.

He wasn’t rushing.

He wasn’t hiding.

He walked calmly through the doors while security officers surrounded him.

A man who knew exactly how powerful he was.

He was older than Adrian.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

A face that looked friendly enough to trust.

That was what made him dangerous.

“Richard.””

My father stared at him.

“Victor.””

Their voices carried years of history.

Years I knew nothing about.

Victor looked at me.

And smiled.

“So this is Claire.””

I felt my entire body tense.

Not because he knew my name.

Because he said it like he had been waiting years to say it.

My father stepped in front of me.

“You don’t speak to her.””

Victor laughed.

“Still protective.””

He looked around.

“After all these years, you still think hiding her will keep her safe.””

I stared at my father.

“What is he talking about?””

Victor smiled.

“Your father never told you?””

My father’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

Victor ignored him.

“Your mother and I created the original Ellison security system.””

I looked at him.

“You knew my mother?””

“Yes.””

The answer came easily.

“I respected her.””

My father’s hands tightened.

“You betrayed her.””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“I offered her an opportunity.””

“You offered her control.””

Victor shrugged.

“Control creates stability.””

I almost laughed.

People like him always used beautiful words to describe ugly actions.

Stability.

Protection.

Opportunity.

They never called it what it really was.

Power.

Victor looked at Adrian.

“And you.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You used me.””

Victor smiled.

“No.””

He looked around.

“You used yourself.””

The words hit harder because they were partly true.

Victor continued.

“I gave you access. I gave you resources. I watched what you did with them.””

His eyes moved to me.

“And then you found Claire.””

Adrian looked away.

I saw the guilt.

Victor noticed.

“That was unexpected.””

My stomach tightened.

“What was?””

Victor smiled.

“You.””

I froze.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

He walked closer.

“You were supposed to be a weakness.””

My father moved forward.

“Enough.””

Victor continued anyway.

“But Adrian made the mistake of actually caring about you.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Stop.””

Victor looked at him.

“Isn’t that what happened?””

The silence answered.

I hated that a part of me still wanted to defend Adrian.

Even after everything.

Victor turned back to me.

“Your mother hid something from everyone.””

“What?””

“A financial key.””

My father’s face changed.

Victor smiled.

“There it is.””

I looked at Dad.

“You knew.””

He didn’t deny it.

Victor continued.

“The key controls access to accounts and records connected to one of the largest private networks in the world.””

My eyes narrowed.

“And you think I have it?””

“I know you do.””

“I don’t.””

Victor smiled.

“You do.””

My father looked at me.

Then I remembered.

A small necklace my mother gave me when I was seven.

A necklace I thought was just sentimental.

A necklace I had kept my entire life.

Victor watched my face.

And smiled.

“You remember.””

My hand immediately moved toward my neck.

The necklace was still there.

Victor’s expression changed.

“Thank you.””

I stepped back.

Because I understood.

The necklace wasn’t just a memory.

It was a target.

Security officers moved toward Victor.

But he didn’t resist.

He simply looked at me.

“Ask your father why your mother trusted you more than him.””

My father froze.

Victor smiled.

“Ask him what she discovered before she died.””

The room became silent.

And for the first time in my life…

May you like

I wondered if my mother had been protecting me from Victor.

Or protecting me from the truth about my own family.
