Chapter 2: The Name He Never Knew
Adrian laughed when I ended the call.
Not a nervous laugh.
A confident one.
The kind of laugh a man gives when he believes he has already won.
“You called your father?””
He shook his head.
“That’s your big revenge?””
Vanessa stepped beside him.
“She’s desperate.””
I slipped my phone back into my pocket.
“No, Vanessa.””
I looked at her expensive necklace.
The one I had bought for myself two years ago.
The one Adrian gave her after changing the story and pretending it was his idea.
“I’m finally honest.””
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Claire, stop pretending. Your father might have money, but he doesn’t control me.””
I tilted my head.
“You really believe that?””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
That was the saddest part.
He truly believed it.
Because he had spent years building a world where he was always the smartest person in the room.
He never noticed the people quietly moving around him.
The investors who respected my family.
The executives who answered my father’s calls.
The board members who had known my last name since before Adrian knew my first.
Vanessa noticed something was wrong.
Her confidence began slipping.
“Adrian,” she whispered, “maybe we should leave.””
He ignored her.
“No.””
His eyes stayed on me.
“I want to hear this.””
I smiled faintly.
“Fine.””
I walked toward the dining table and picked up the folder Vanessa had dropped earlier.
The fake emails were still inside.
“You accused me of stealing company information.””
“You did.””
“No.””
I opened the folder.
“These files were created three days ago.””
Adrian frowned.
“How would you know?””
“Because I designed the original security system Mercer Dynamics uses.””
Silence.
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“You didn’t know?””
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Because Vanessa had always believed I was just a wife.
A decoration.
Someone who smiled at dinners and stayed quiet during business conversations.
She never knew I had spent years analyzing companies before I married Adrian.
She never knew my father trained me to recognize financial fraud before I was old enough to drive.
Adrian stared at me.
“You worked in finance.””
“I did.””
“You weren’t an expert.””
“I was.””
His expression turned uncertain.
“Then why hide it?””
The question almost hurt.
Because the answer was simple.
“Because I wanted to know if you loved me.””
The room became quiet.
I remembered our first date.
Adrian sitting across from me at a small restaurant.
No cameras.
No business partners.
No family names.
Just two people talking until midnight.
Back then, he said he didn’t care about money.
He said he wanted someone who saw him as Adrian.
Not as the future CEO of Mercer Dynamics.
I believed him.
I was wrong.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You’re lying.””
I looked at her.
“Am I?””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because she knew.
She knew exactly what she had done.
The fake emails.
The manipulation.
The way she pushed Adrian to remove me from his life.
Adrian grabbed the folder.
“What are you saying?””
I looked at him.
“I’m saying the files you accused me of leaking were planted.””
“By who?””
I didn’t answer.
I didn’t need to.
Adrian slowly turned toward Vanessa.
For the first time that night, he looked at her differently.
“Vanessa?””
Her face went pale.
“Adrian, don’t listen to her.””
“Did you create those emails?””
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
I watched him notice.
People lie differently when they’re innocent.
The innocent person explains.
The guilty person attacks.
Vanessa pointed at me.
“She’s manipulating you!””
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared on the screen.
From my father.
I read it silently.
Then I turned the phone around.
Adrian saw the name at the top.
His face changed instantly.
Because finally, he understood.
The person who had answered my call wasn’t just my father.
He was the man who had financed Adrian’s first major expansion.
The man whose company had quietly become Mercer Dynamics’ largest private partner.
The man Adrian had spent years trying to impress.
My father.
Richard Ellison.
Adrian stepped back.
“No.””
His voice became smaller.
“No, that’s impossible.””
I looked at him.
“You should have asked who I was before you hurt me.””
Then another notification appeared.
My father had sent one sentence.

*The board meeting starts in three minutes.*
And Adrian’s phone began ringing.
