Chapter 8: The Secret My Mother Left Behind
Nobody touched the file.
Not immediately.
It sat there beneath the cold white lights of the archive room, waiting.
My name on the cover.
My past inside.
I looked at my father.
“Why is this here?””
He didn’t answer.
That hurt more than I expected.
Because my father had always been honest with me.
Until now.
“Dad.””
He slowly walked toward the table.
“Your mother knew Victor Hale before I did.””
I froze.
“What?””
Adrian looked confused.
“Before you?””
My father nodded.
“Years ago, Victor and your mother worked together.””
I stared at the file.
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
My father opened it carefully.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Old contracts.
And a letter.
My mother’s handwriting.
I knew it instantly.
My hands trembled.
“She wrote this?””
“Yes.””
I picked up the letter.
The paper was old.
But the handwriting was familiar.
The same handwriting that used to leave notes in my lunch when I was a child.
I unfolded it.
Only one sentence was visible.
*If Victor ever finds Claire, he will try to use her.*
I stopped breathing.
Adrian stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
I kept reading.
The letter explained that years ago, Victor Hale discovered something about Ellison Capital.
Something connected to a financial project my mother had worked on before her death.
She discovered Victor wasn’t trying to build an empire.
He was trying to control one.
And she hid the evidence.
She hid it somewhere only I could access.
Because she believed Victor would eventually come for me.
I lowered the letter.
“She knew.””
My voice cracked.
“She knew this would happen.””
My father nodded.
“She spent her final months making sure you were safe.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His face changed.
“Because I thought if Victor believed you were just Claire Hart, he would leave you alone.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“So you let me live a normal life.””
“Yes.””
“Without knowing I was being hunted.””
His silence answered.
I turned away.
I wanted to be angry.
I wanted to blame him.
But deep down, I understood.
My father had spent my entire life trying to build a wall around me.
He just never told me the wall had cracks.
Adrian picked up another document.
His expression changed.
“What is this?””
My father took it.
Then his face hardened.
A contract.
Between Victor Hale and Vanessa Vale.
Adrian stared.
“She worked for him.””
“Yes.””
“From the beginning?””
My father nodded.
Adrian closed his eyes.
The betrayal finally became real.
Not just that Vanessa lied.
That every moment he thought he was choosing her…
He was being guided.
Then the security alarm sounded again.
Everyone turned.
Evelyn’s voice came through the speaker.
“Mr. Ellison.””
My father pressed the communication button.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“Someone is leaving the building.””
“Who?””
Another pause.
Then Evelyn answered.
“Vanessa Vale.””
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
“She’s here?””
I grabbed the file.
“Why would she come back?””
Nobody knew.
Until the cameras showed her.
She wasn’t running.
She wasn’t hiding.
She was walking directly toward the exit.
Carrying something.
A small black case.
My father stared.
“That case.””
“What?””
His eyes stayed on the screen.
“That’s what Victor wanted.””
I looked at the monitor.
Vanessa stopped near the entrance.
Then she turned.
And looked directly into the security camera.
As if she knew we were watching.
Then she smiled.
May you like
And mouthed three words.
*Ask Claire’s father.*
