Chapter 13: The Room Beneath Mercer Dynamics
The old Mercer Dynamics headquarters had been abandoned for almost a year.
That was what Adrian told us.
But when we arrived, I immediately knew something was wrong.
Buildings didn’t feel abandoned when secrets were still alive inside them.
The lobby was dark.
The marble floor was covered with dust.
The company logo on the wall was cracked, but still visible.
A symbol of an empire that had almost collapsed.
Adrian walked ahead with a security keycard.
I followed behind him.
Not because I trusted him.
Not yet.
But because the truth was somewhere inside this building.
And I needed to find it.
My father walked beside me.
Neither of us spoke.
The silence between us was different now.
Not anger.
Not forgiveness.
Something in between.
A wound that was still open.
Adrian stopped near an elevator.
“This wasn’t on any public record.””
He entered a code.
The elevator doors opened.
My father looked at him.
“You knew about this?””
Adrian shook his head.
“Not exactly.””
That answer bothered me.
“What does that mean?””
He stepped inside.
“It means I knew there was something strange about this building.””
The elevator descended.
Lower.
Far lower than any normal basement.
When the doors opened, we saw a hallway.
A hallway that shouldn’t exist.
The walls were reinforced steel.
Security cameras covered every corner.
My father’s expression changed.
“Victor built this.””
Adrian nodded.
“But he didn’t build it alone.””
I looked at him.
“Who helped him?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
And I already knew.
Someone from my past.
Someone connected to my mother.
We reached the final door.
Adrian placed his hand against the scanner.
Nothing happened.
Then he looked at me.
“Try.””
I frowned.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
I stepped forward.
I pressed my finger against the scanner.
A green light appeared.
The door unlocked.
Everyone became silent.
My mother’s system recognized me.
Not my father.
Not Adrian.
Me.
Inside was a small room.
A single desk.
A computer.
And hundreds of files.
My name was everywhere.
My entire life.
I walked toward the desk.
A photograph sat on top.
My mother.
And beside her…
A younger Victor Hale.
My stomach tightened.
They weren’t enemies.
Not at first.
My father picked up the photo.
“She trusted him.””
“Yes,” I whispered.
“And then he betrayed her.””
I looked at the computer.
The screen turned on automatically.
One message appeared.
*WELCOME, CLAIRE.*
My hands shook.
A recording started.
My mother appeared on the screen.
Older than the last message.
Tired.
But determined.
“Claire, if you found this room, then Victor failed.””
I held my breath.
“You need to understand something.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“The person who betrayed me was not Victor.””
My father froze.
“What?””
The recording continued.
“Victor wanted power. But someone else wanted control.””
The screen displayed a file.
A name.
I stared.
Because I knew it.
Everyone knew it.
The person who had secretly funded Victor’s early operations.
The person who had access to Ellison and Mercer systems.
The person who had been invisible for years.
My mother whispered:
“Your father’s closest advisor.””
My father stepped back.
“No.””
The recording continued.
“He was the one who gave Victor information.””
My father’s face changed.
Because he knew exactly who she meant.
“Ethan.””
The name escaped him.
My father looked destroyed.
Ethan Cole.
His closest friend.
His business partner.
The man who had worked beside him for twenty-five years.
Adrian stared at the screen.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at him.
He walked closer.
“Ethan wasn’t just connected to Ellison.””
His voice became quiet.
“He was connected to Mercer too.””
My blood ran cold.
“How?””
Adrian looked at me.
“Because he introduced me to Victor.””
The room went silent.
Everything connected.
The funding.
The marriage.
The manipulation.
All of it.
But then the computer displayed another file.
A video.
Recorded three years ago.
The day Adrian met me.
I pressed play.
The screen showed a restaurant.
Adrian sitting across from someone.
Ethan.
My husband’s voice filled the room.
“I don’t want to do this.””
Ethan smiled.
“You don’t have a choice.””
Adrian looked younger.
Conflicted.
“What if she finds out?””
Ethan leaned forward.
“She won’t.””
My heart stopped.
Because then Ethan said:
“She’s just a tool to get access.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
I turned toward Adrian.
The pain on his face was real.
But the betrayal was real too.
“You knew.””
He shook his head immediately.
“Not like that.””
“But you knew there was a reason.””
“Yes.””
My eyes burned.
“And you still married me.””
He looked down.
“I fell in love with you.””
I wanted to believe him.
But love didn’t erase choices.
Then the computer beeped.
A final file opened.
A message from my mother.
Only three words.
*Trust Claire.*
May you like
And underneath:
*She is the key.*
