Chapter 12: The Last Message
The necklace felt heavier than it ever had before.
I touched it while everyone watched.
A small silver pendant.
Something I had worn since childhood.
Something I thought represented my mother’s love.
Now it felt like a secret.
My father noticed.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“What did Mom find?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My eyes filled with disappointment.
“Dad.””
His expression broke.
“I wanted to tell you.””
“When?””
He looked away.
“After everything was over.””
I shook my head.
“That’s what everyone says.””
The room became quiet.
Even Victor stopped smiling.
Because he knew.
The people I loved had hurt me in the same way.
They made decisions for me.
They decided what I could handle.
They decided what I deserved to know.
My father walked closer.
“Your mother discovered Victor wasn’t only buying companies.””
He pointed at the documents.
“He was creating a network.””
“A network of what?””
“Influence.””
Victor laughed.
“Your father makes me sound like a villain.””
I turned toward him.
“You are.””
For the first time, his smile disappeared.
My father continued.
“Your mother found evidence that Victor had manipulated investors, executives, and entire companies.””
“And the necklace?””
My father nodded.
“She hid the final proof inside it.””
I stared.
“How?””
“It requires your fingerprint.””
I looked down.
“My fingerprint?””
“Yes.””
A small device suddenly beeped from the table.
Everyone turned.
The necklace had activated.
A tiny blue light appeared beneath the pendant.
Victor’s expression changed.
For the first time…
He looked afraid.
“No.””
My father noticed.
“Claire, take it off.””
But before I could move, Victor stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Everyone froze.
His voice was no longer calm.
It was desperate.
“That device contains information you don’t understand.””
I stared at him.
“Exactly.””
I removed the necklace.
The pendant opened slightly.
Inside was a tiny encrypted chip.
Adrian whispered:
“Your mother hid an entire system in a necklace?””
My father nodded.
“She knew nobody would search something so personal.””
I looked at the chip.
Then at my father.
“Why did she trust me with this?””
His eyes became wet.
“Because she knew you would choose the truth.””
The words hurt.
Because maybe my mother knew me better than everyone else.
A screen appeared on the device.
One file.
One recording.
Created twenty years ago.
The date of my mother’s final investigation.
I pressed play.
Her voice filled the room.
My knees almost gave out.
“Claire.””
Everyone went silent.
My mother continued.
“If you are hearing this, then Victor found you.””
I covered my mouth.
Her voice was exactly as I remembered.
Warm.
Gentle.
But afraid.
“Your father will try to protect you.””
I looked at Dad.
“He always does.””
A small pause.
“But protection without truth can become another prison.””
My father closed his eyes.
The message continued.
“Claire, there is one thing you must know.””
The screen flickered.
Then my mother said the words that changed everything.
“The person who helped Victor find me…”
The recording stopped.
A loading symbol appeared.
Everyone stared.
Then the device displayed one final line.
*FILE DAMAGED. SECOND PART REQUIRED.*
Victor suddenly moved.
Security grabbed him.
But he wasn’t looking at them.
He was looking at Adrian.
And Adrian’s face had gone completely pale.
Because he recognized something.
Something in the damaged file.
Something only he knew.
I turned toward him.
“Adrian.””
He didn’t answer.
“What did you see?””
His lips parted.
Then he whispered:
“The second part of that message…”
He looked at me.
“It’s hidden in the one place nobody thought to search.””
My heart sank.
“Where?””
Adrian swallowed.
“In my company.””
A silence followed.
Then he said:
“Your mother didn’t hide the truth from Victor.””
May you like
He looked at me with fear in his eyes.
“She hid it from me.””
