Chapter 3: The Fall of Mercer Dynamics

Adrian stared at his phone as if it had become a bomb.

The name flashing on the screen belonged to someone who never called him personally.

Someone who didn’t need to.

Richard Ellison.

My father.

Vanessa looked between us.

“Adrian, don’t answer that.””

He ignored her.

Slowly, he pressed the button.

“Mr. Ellison.””

My father’s voice came through the speaker.

Cold.

Controlled.

Nothing like the gentle man who hugged me when I was a child.

“Adrian Mercer.””

Adrian swallowed.

“Yes.””

“You have ten minutes to explain why my daughter is injured, why false documents were submitted under her name, and why a woman with access to your company’s internal systems was allowed to manipulate your decisions.””

Adrian looked at me.

For the first time all night, there was no anger.

Only fear.

“How did you—”

My father interrupted.

“Because unlike you, I investigate before I accuse.””

The call ended.

The silence afterward was unbearable.

Vanessa moved closer to Adrian.

“Don’t let her father intimidate you.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You said Claire was jealous.””

Vanessa froze.

“You said she wanted to destroy me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“No.””

His voice was different now.

“You were trying to control me.””

I watched the woman who had spent months winning his attention suddenly realize she might lose everything.

She reached for his arm.

“Adrian, please.””

He pulled away.

That small movement told me everything.

Not because I felt victorious.

Because I remembered when he pulled away from me.

The first time.

The first time Vanessa’s name appeared on his phone at midnight.

The first time he said, “You’re being paranoid.””

The first time he made me question my own instincts.

I had spent months wondering if I was becoming a jealous wife.

I wasn’t.

I was a wife who trusted the wrong person.

Adrian grabbed his jacket.

“Where are you going?””

Vanessa asked.

He didn’t answer.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, it was his lawyer.

He answered.

“What?””

The color drained from his face.

“What do you mean the investors are calling an emergency meeting?””

I looked away.

Because I already knew.

My father didn’t destroy people with anger.

He destroyed them with facts.

Minutes later, Adrian’s laptop opened automatically.

A notification appeared.

A company-wide announcement.

The Mercer Dynamics board had requested a temporary review of executive authority.

Adrian read it twice.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“No, this can’t happen.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“You said you controlled the board.””

“I did.””

“Then fix it.””

He looked at her.

And for the first time, he saw her clearly.

“You knew.””

Her face changed.

“Knew what?””

“You knew about the documents.””

She stayed silent.

That silence was the answer.

Adrian laughed once.

A broken sound.

“You destroyed everything.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t blame me. You were the one who believed me.””

The sentence hit him harder than any accusation.

Because it was true.

He had chosen every step.

He chose to trust her.

He chose to hurt me.

He chose to raise that belt.

I walked toward the front door.

Adrian noticed.

“Claire.””

I stopped.

“What?””

His voice softened.

The same voice that once made me fall in love with him.

“Are you really going to leave?””

I looked back.

The man standing there was not the powerful CEO from the magazines.

He was someone watching his entire world collapse.

But my heart didn’t move.

Because some wounds were deeper than apologies.

“You already left me,” I said.

His eyes filled with regret.

“I made a mistake.””

I shook my head.

“No, Adrian.””

I opened the door.

“You made twenty.””

I stepped outside into the cold night air.

Behind me, I heard him whisper my name.

But I kept walking.

Because for three years, I had protected his reputation.

Now it was time for the truth to protect me.
