Chapter 10: The Ring’s Hidden Secret

For seven years, I wore the ring because I believed it represented love.

That night, I finally understood it had represented something else.

A lock.

A key.

A secret my father had trusted me to carry without even knowing.

I stared at the simple diamond band on my finger.

The same ring Adrian had placed there while promising me forever.

My entire marriage had been built on a lie.

But somehow, my father’s final plan had been hidden inside it.

“Take it off,” Alexander said quietly.

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The ring.””

My fingers moved automatically.

But the ring didn’t move.

It wouldn’t come off.

I pulled harder.

Nothing.

Thomas stepped closer.

“Richard designed it that way.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Everyone knew except me?””

The pain in my voice made Alexander look away.

Thomas shook his head.

“No one knew the full truth.””

I stared at the ring.

“How does it work?””

Before Thomas could answer, Adrian spoke through the phone.

“Your father didn’t trust anyone after Daniel betrayed him.””

I closed my eyes.

“Not even you?””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“Especially not me.””

That was the first honest thing Adrian had ever said.

Alexander took the phone from my hand.

“You have five seconds to explain why we shouldn’t let the police take you away.””

Adrian didn’t react.

“Because if Daniel gets the ring, he gets access to everything your father protected.””

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“And why would we believe you?””

“Because Daniel tried to kill me yesterday.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Adrian continued.

“He knew I had started questioning him.””

I looked at Alexander.

“He’s lying.””

“Maybe.””

Alexander looked at me.

“But he might also be useful.””

I hated that he was right.

A few minutes later, Adrian entered the building.

The man who walked through the door looked nothing like the man who had stood in the ballroom.

No confidence.

No arrogance.

No smile.

Just exhaustion.

His eyes met mine.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

The words felt strange coming from him.

I almost laughed.

“Sorry?””

He nodded.

“I know that doesn’t fix anything.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“It doesn’t.””

Adrian accepted it.

For once, he didn’t argue.

“I never planned for this.””

I stared at him.

“You planned everything else.””

His jaw tightened.

“I thought I could control Daniel.””

“And then?””

“He controlled me.””

The silence was uncomfortable.

Because for the first time, Adrian wasn’t pretending to be powerful.

He looked broken.

But broken people could still hurt others.

I remembered that.

Alexander placed a device on the table.

“We have one problem.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The ring.””

He pointed toward my hand.

“The mechanism is active.””

Thomas frowned.

“Impossible.””

Alexander looked at the screen.

“It’s transmitting.””

My heart stopped.

“Transmitting to who?””

Nobody answered.

Then every phone in the room received the same notification.

A message.

From Daniel Voss.

Thank you for bringing the key back to me.

My blood went cold.

A second message appeared.

You have no idea what your father left behind.

Then a final one.

And Emily… ask Adrian why your father trusted him with the ring.

Everyone looked at Adrian.

His face changed.

May you like

Because whatever Daniel was talking about…

Adrian knew.
