Chapter 4: The Evidence Room

I had spent seven years protecting Adrian Cole from the truth.

Now, I watched him try to protect himself from it.

The room outside the ballroom had become silent after my answer.

“Yes,” I whispered.

Alexander’s expression didn’t change.

But I knew him.

I saw the small movement of his jaw.

The controlled anger.

The kind that meant he was forcing himself not to destroy everything around him.

“How many times?”” he asked.

I looked down at my hands.

The red marks around my wrists were already forming.

“Enough.””

Adrian immediately stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous.””

Alexander turned toward him.

“Ridiculous?””

Adrian lifted his hands.

“She’s exaggerating because she’s angry.””

I stared at him.

After everything.

After everything he had done.

He still thought I would protect him.

Alexander noticed my silence.

“Emily.””

I looked at him.

“Tell me.””

My throat tightened.

I remembered every moment I had buried.

The first time Adrian screamed at me because dinner was ten minutes late.

The time he smashed a family photograph because I refused to cancel a charity event.

The night he told me nobody would believe me because everyone loved him.

I swallowed.

“He never hit me before tonight.””

Adrian relaxed slightly.

Then I continued.

“But he made sure I was afraid of him.””

That changed everything.

Alexander’s eyes returned to Adrian.

“You built a prison without needing walls.””

Adrian laughed nervously.

“You’re making this sound worse than it is.””

Alexander looked at him.

“No.””

He nodded toward the room.

“You did that yourself.””

One of the people who entered with Alexander stepped forward.

A woman wearing glasses opened a folder.

“Mr. Sinclair, I brought the records you requested.””

Adrian frowned.

“What records?””

The woman ignored him.

“Security footage. Financial transfers. Communication logs.””

My stomach dropped.

“Alex…”

He looked at me gently.

“I told you I wasn’t coming here to embarrass you.””

I looked at the files.

“Then why?””

His voice softened.

“Because you spent years trying to prove you didn’t need us.””

A pause.

“But needing help is not the same as being weak.””

Nobody spoke.

Even Adrian’s family looked uncomfortable.

Alexander turned to the woman.

“Show them.””

A large screen in the ballroom turned on.

The first video appeared.

It was Adrian.

Three months earlier.

Standing in his office.

Talking to Vanessa.

My breath caught.

“I thought he deleted everything,” I whispered.

Alexander looked at me.

“He did.””

A small pause.

“Your husband is very good at hiding mistakes.””

The video played.

Adrian was smiling.

“You don’t understand, Vanessa. Emily will never leave.””

Vanessa laughed.

“She’s too loyal.””

Adrian poured himself a drink.

“She thinks love means forgiveness.””

The room became colder.

Then Vanessa asked:

“What if she finds out?””

Adrian smiled.

“She won’t.””

The video stopped.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody looked away.

Richard Cole cleared his throat.

“This proves nothing.””

Alexander turned.

“Your son admitted he was manipulating my sister.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“You have no right to come into this house.””

Alexander smiled slightly.

“You’re correct.””

He stepped closer.

“I don’t have a right.””

A pause.

“I have authority.””

The room shifted.

Adrian finally understood.

This wasn’t a family argument.

This was a battle he had already lost.

He walked toward me.

“Emily, listen.””

I looked at him.

The man I married.

The man I loved.

The man who had watched me cry tonight.

“I made mistakes.””

I almost smiled.

Mistakes.

Such a small word for something that had broken my entire life.

“You tied me up at my birthday party.””

His face changed.

“I was angry.””

“You humiliated me.””

“Emily—”

“You let people laugh.””

Silence.

Then I said the words I had never allowed myself to say.

“I don’t know you anymore.””

For the first time, Adrian looked afraid.

Alexander placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Come home.””

Those two words nearly broke me.

Because I realized something.

I had spent years trying to make Adrian choose me.

But my family had been waiting for me the entire time.

As we walked toward the entrance, my phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice spoke.

“Mrs. Cole?””

I froze.

“Yes?””

“We found something in the mansion office.””

My eyes moved toward Adrian.

“What?””

May you like

The voice lowered.

“Something your husband never wanted you to see.””
