Chapter 2: The Name I Buried
The ballroom doors remained closed.
Nobody laughed anymore.
The confidence Adrian carried only minutes earlier had disappeared.
He stared at the security guard.
“Who exactly is outside?””
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know, sir.””
Adrian walked toward him.
“Then find out.””
The guard hesitated.
“Mr. Cole… they already know everything about the property.””
A strange feeling moved through my chest.
Not fear.
Something else.
Something I had buried for years.
Hope.
Adrian turned back toward me.
“What did you do?””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Who did you call?””
I almost laughed.
The irony was almost painful.
For years, Adrian had accused me of being secretive.
But the one thing I hid was the one thing that could have saved me.
“I didn’t call anyone.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“She’s lying.””
Adrian walked closer.
“You expect me to believe this is a coincidence?””
I stared at him.
“Yes.””
His face hardened.
“You really think someone is coming to rescue you?””
The old me would have apologized.
The old me would have begged him to stop.
The old me would have tried to fix everything.
But that woman disappeared when his belt hit the floor.
“I don’t need rescuing,” I said.
Adrian smiled coldly.
“You’re tied to a chair.””
I looked directly into his eyes.
“And you’re still afraid.””
For the first time that night, he looked uncertain.
Margaret stood up.
“Adrian, don’t let her manipulate you.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She’s always been pretending to be innocent.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Interesting.””
Her smile faded.
“What?””
“You’re wearing my necklace.””
Her fingers immediately touched the diamonds.
Adrian noticed.
“Enough.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“I think everyone should know.””
The room became still.
“You didn’t just steal my husband.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You’re crazy.””
“You stole the necklace he gave me after our anniversary trip.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Emily.””
“You told him I lost it.””
Vanessa looked around.
Nobody laughed now.
Because they were beginning to understand.
Adrian stepped closer.
“Careful.””
I smiled weakly.
“Why? Because the truth hurts?””
Before he could answer, the sound of the front doors opening echoed through the mansion.
Everyone turned.
The security guards moved away.
A man entered the ballroom.
Tall.
Calm.
Wearing a dark coat over a perfectly fitted suit.
Behind him walked several people carrying briefcases.
But I didn’t look at them.
I only looked at him.
My brother.
Alexander Sinclair.
The man I had not seen in seven years.
The man who had called me every month.
The man whose messages I ignored because I wanted to prove I could build a life without my family.
His eyes moved across the room.
The tied chair.
The guards.
Adrian.
Vanessa.
Then finally me.
And the expression on his face changed.
Not anger.
Something much colder.
Disappointment.
“Emily.””
My eyes burned.
“Alex…”
His voice was quiet.
“Who did this to you?””
Nobody answered.
Because suddenly everyone understood.
The woman they mocked.
The woman they called helpless.
The woman they believed had nowhere to go.
Had a family name they had never even heard.
Adrian forced a laugh.
“This is a misunderstanding.””
Alexander slowly turned toward him.
“Is it?””
Adrian straightened his jacket.
“I’m her husband.””
Alexander looked at the rope around my wrists.
Then at the security guards.
Then back at Adrian.
“My sister came into your house as your wife.””
His voice dropped.
“And you treated her like a prisoner.””
Adrian’s confidence returned slightly.
“You don’t understand our marriage.””
Alexander walked closer.
“No.””
He glanced around the room.
“I understand exactly what happened.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Who are you to interfere?””
Alexander looked at her.
The silence that followed made her take a step back.
Then he answered.
“The person Adrian should have been afraid of before he touched my sister.””
Adrian’s face went pale.
Because he finally realized something.
He had spent seven years believing Emily Parker was alone.
But Emily Parker had never been alone.
She was Emily Sinclair.
And the man standing in front of him was not just her brother.
He was the reason powerful people checked their decisions twice.
Alexander walked to my chair and gently cut the restraints.
As my hands fell free, he whispered:
“Emily, I need you to tell me one thing.””
I looked up.
“What?””
His eyes moved to Adrian.
“Did he do this before tonight?””
May you like
The entire room waited for my answer.
And I knew the moment I spoke, Adrian Cole’s perfect world would begin to collapse.
