Chapter 13: The Mother Who Knew Everything
My mother stood in the doorway like she had been carrying a secret for years.
Because she had.
The woman who had held my hand at my father’s funeral.
The woman who cried beside me when we buried him.
The woman who told me we would survive.
Was the same woman standing in front of me while the alarm screamed through the house.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Alexander stepped forward.
“Mom.””
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just broken.
My mother looked at him.
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
I stared at her.
“Find out what?””
Her eyes moved to me.
And I saw it.
The guilt.
“Everything.””
The word felt heavier than it should have.
I laughed softly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
My mother’s face tightened.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m done hearing that people lied to protect me.””
She looked down.
“I deserve that.””
Alexander’s voice was cold.
“Were you the one who activated the ring?””
My mother didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t activate it.””
“Then why are you here?””
She stepped into the room.
“Because I know who did.””
Everyone became still.
“Who?””
She looked at Alexander.
Then at me.
“Daniel Voss.””
Alexander frowned.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
My mother nodded.
“It does.””
She reached into her purse and placed a small envelope on the table.
“This is what your father left me.””
Alexander stared.
“You had another message?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because your father told me not to.””
The room went silent.
I looked at the envelope.
“What was inside?””
My mother opened it carefully.
A single page.
A handwritten note.
She read the first line.
“Margaret, if Daniel discovers the account, everything we built will fall.””
Alexander froze.
“Margaret?””
My mother nodded.
“Your father knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That Daniel had someone inside the company.””
I looked between them.
“Someone besides Adrian?””
My mother’s face changed.
“Yes.””
A terrible feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
She looked at Alexander.
And I knew before she spoke.
“No.””
My mother whispered:
“Your father suspected Richard Cole.””
Adrian’s father.
The man who had laughed while I was tied up.
The man who called me lucky to be accepted into his family.
Alexander looked stunned.
“But why?””
“Because Richard helped Daniel hide money.””
I sat down.
Everything kept connecting.
Every betrayal.
Every lie.
Every person I trusted.
My mother continued.
“Your father didn’t know how far it went.””
She looked at me.
“But he knew one thing.””
“What?””
“He knew Daniel would eventually come after you.””
I touched the ring.
“Because of this.””
“Yes.””
Alexander looked at the documents.
“Then why would Adrian know about it?””
My mother answered quietly.
“Because Adrian was not the only person Daniel recruited.””
A chill moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
She looked at the door.
Then back at us.
“Adrian was only the first person sent to get close to Emily.””
The room went silent.
I whispered:
“First?””
My mother nodded.
“There was someone else.””
Before anyone could ask, the security system suddenly shut down.
The lights flickered.
The alarm stopped.
Alexander immediately reached for his phone.
“No signal.””
Then every screen in the library turned black.
A message appeared.
Not from Daniel.
Not from Adrian.
From someone else.
You finally found the truth.
I stared.
Another line appeared.
But you still don’t know who started it.
Then the final message.
Ask your mother why she let your father die.
My mother’s face went pale.
May you like
And for the first time in my life…
I saw fear in her eyes.
