Chapter 14: The Last Promise
Nobody accused my mother.
Not immediately.
Because sometimes the people who hurt you most are the ones you cannot imagine hurting you at all.
But the message changed everything.
Alexander looked at her.
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
“I knew this day would come.””
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
She looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
Her shoulders dropped.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“About Dad?””
“Yes.””
“About Adrian?””
“Yes.””
“About everything?””
A tear rolled down her face.
“Yes.””
I turned away.
The pain was almost too much.
“I spent years thinking I was abandoned by everyone.””
My voice shook.
“And all of you knew.””
My mother walked closer.
“We were trying to keep you alive.””
I looked at her.
“Alive?””
She nodded.
“Daniel does not forgive betrayal.””
Alexander stepped forward.
“Mom, explain.””
She sat down.
“The night your father died wasn’t an accident.””
We already knew.
But hearing her say it made it real.
“He was meeting someone.””
“Who?””
She looked at me.
“Adrian.””
The room froze.
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
My mother nodded sadly.
“Your father believed Adrian could help expose Daniel.””
Alexander looked confused.
“But Adrian worked for Daniel.””
“Not anymore.””
My mother looked at me.
“Your father saw something in him.””
I remembered Adrian’s confession.
The mission was fake.
But some moments were real.
“He believed Adrian loved me.””
My mother nodded.
“Yes.””
I hated that part.
Because it made everything more complicated.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But complicated.
“What happened that night?””
My mother took a deep breath.
“Your father planned to meet Adrian and give him evidence.””
“And?””
“Daniel found out.””
The room became silent.
“Daniel followed them.””
My hands went cold.
“Did Adrian know?””
My mother looked down.
“At first, no.””
Alexander’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Adrian realized too late.””
A terrible silence followed.
“Your father was already dying.””
I closed my eyes.
The image hurt.
My father.
The man who taught me to ride a bike.
The man who called me his little girl.
Gone because of a war I never knew existed.
My mother continued.
“Before he died, he gave Adrian one instruction.””
“What?””
“Protect Emily.””
I looked away.
A bitter laugh escaped.
“Some protection.””
My mother accepted the pain.
“Yes.””
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone froze.
It was Adrian’s phone.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
Alexander grabbed it.
A message.
From Daniel.
You found the truth.
Another message appeared.
Now watch what happens when everyone loses.
Then a video loaded.
The screen showed Richard Cole.
Adrian’s father.
Sitting in a chair.
Alive.
But terrified.
A voice behind the camera spoke.
“Adrian.””
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“You wanted to betray me.””
Adrian went pale.
“Now you can watch your father pay for it.””
The video ended.
I looked at Adrian.
For the first time, I didn’t see my enemy.
I saw someone who had finally lost control of the monster he helped create.
Alexander stood.
“We’re going after Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
I removed the ring from my finger.
This time, it opened.
Inside was a tiny piece of metal.
A hidden message.
My father’s final instruction.
I read it.
Then I looked up.
“I know where Daniel is.””
Alexander stared.
“How?””
I held up the small metal piece.
“Because my father left us a map.””
May you like
A pause.
“And he knew we would need it.””
