Chapter 11: The Betrayal Before the Betrayal

The room became painfully quiet.

Everyone was looking at Adrian.

Waiting.

Demanding answers.

I hated that a small part of me still hoped he would surprise me.

That he would say something that made everything make sense.

But hope had hurt me enough.

“Explain.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Adrian looked at me.

“I didn’t know about the ring at first.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“That’s not what she asked.””

Adrian swallowed.

“Your father gave it to me.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Before the wedding.””

My heart sank.

“You knew my father before we met.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Because he had no good answer.

I saw it in his face.

“I was supposed to watch you.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Not because I didn’t know.

Because hearing him admit it made it real.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked down.

“Daniel wanted information about your family.””

“And you agreed.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse than another lie.

Alexander moved toward him.

“You married my sister as part of a plan.””

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

I touched the ring.

“So everything was fake?””

Adrian looked at me.

“No.””

That answer surprised me.

“What?””

“The mission was fake.””

He stepped closer.

“But you weren’t.””

I stared at him.

“Don’t.””

“I’m telling the truth.””

“You don’t get to decide when the truth matters.””

His face fell.

“I know.””

I turned away.

Because a part of me remembered the good moments.

The mornings when he made coffee.

The nights we talked until sunrise.

The way he held my hand when I was afraid.

And that was the cruelest part.

Not every moment had been fake.

Some of them had been real.

And that made the betrayal worse.

Thomas interrupted.

“We need to focus.””

I looked at him.

“What happens if Daniel gets the ring?””

Alexander answered.

“He gets access to your father’s hidden files.””

“What files?””

He looked at the screen.

“The evidence he collected against everyone involved.””

I looked at Adrian.

“Everyone?””

Adrian nodded.

“Daniel wasn’t only stealing from your family.””

“What else?””

“He was buying people.””

The room went quiet.

“Politicians. Executives. Competitors.””

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“He built an empire from secrets.””

Thomas opened the folder.

“There’s something else.””

He pulled out a small device.

“This was found inside the ring’s original design documents.””

I looked at it.

A tiny symbol.

A symbol I had seen before.

On my father’s old watch.

On the family crest.

“What is that?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father’s final message.””

He pressed a button.

A recording started.

My father’s voice filled the room.

My knees nearly gave out.

“Emily.””

Six years disappeared in an instant.

“ if you are hearing this, then I failed to protect you.””

I covered my mouth.

Alexander looked away.

The recording continued.

“Your brother will try to carry this burden alone. Don’t let him.””

A pause.

“Trust carefully.””

My father’s voice became quieter.

“There is someone close to you who knows more than they admit.””

Everyone looked around.

Then the recording ended.

The screen flashed.

One final line appeared.

The traitor is not outside the family.

I stared at the words.

Not outside the family.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Alexander looked at me.

I looked at him.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

I wondered if my brother had been hiding something too.
