Chapter 1: The Birthday Betrayal

The thirtieth strike was the one that finally killed the love I had spent seven years protecting.

Not the first time Adrian Cole humiliated me.

Not the tenth time he made me feel like a stranger inside my own home.

Not even the moment his security guards wrapped their hands around my wrists and tied me beneath the enormous crystal chandelier in our ballroom while our guests watched.

It was the laughter that did it.

The laughter of fifty people who had once called themselves my friends.

The laughter of the family I had tried so hard to impress.

The laughter of the man who had promised me, on our wedding day, that he would spend his life protecting me.

“Happy birthday, sweetheart.””

Adrian stood in front of me, his expensive black suit perfectly pressed, his expression filled with amusement.

The leather belt slipped from his hand and landed on the marble floor with a sharp crack.

The room went silent.

I stared at him, unable to recognize the man standing in front of me.

Seven years ago, Adrian Cole had held my hands and told me I was the only person in the world who made him feel understood.

Tonight, he looked at me like I was an inconvenience.

“Adrian…” My voice trembled.

“What are you doing?””

He tilted his head.

“Teaching you a lesson.””

Beside him stood Vanessa Whitmore.

The woman who had spent months pretending to be my friend.

The woman wearing the diamond necklace Adrian had given me on our fifth anniversary.

The necklace I had once believed represented our love.

Vanessa touched the diamonds around her neck and smiled.

“Honestly, Emily, you should be thanking me.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For showing you the truth.””

She stepped closer, holding up her phone.

“I want to record this. People should see what happens when someone forgets their place.””

My stomach twisted.

“Adrian, tell her to put that away.””

Instead, he laughed.

“You’re still giving orders?””

His mother, Margaret Cole, sat near the fireplace, sipping champagne like she was watching a performance.

“Some women need to be reminded of their position,” she said.

A few guests laughed.

I looked around the ballroom.

The same room where Adrian had thrown me a surprise birthday party two years ago.

The same room where he had danced with me beneath this chandelier.

The same room where I had believed I was loved.

“Someone help me,” I whispered.

Nobody moved.

My eyes searched every face.

A businessman Adrian worked with.

A neighbor who borrowed my recipes.

A woman who once told me I was like a daughter to her.

They all looked away.

Adrian crouched in front of me and grabbed my chin.

“Still waiting?””

I pulled my face away.

“Waiting for what?””

He smiled.

“Your imaginary rich family.””

My heart stopped for half a second.

He knew.

But he didn’t know the truth.

For seven years, I had hidden my family name.

I had removed my old surname from every document.

I had moved away from everything my family built.

I wanted Adrian to love Emily Parker.

Not Emily Sinclair.

Not the daughter of the Sinclair family.

Not the sister of the man whose name appeared on business magazines around the world.

I wanted a normal marriage.

A normal life.

A husband who loved me for me.

Instead, Adrian had mistaken my silence for weakness.

“You lied to me,” he whispered.

“No,” I said quietly.

“I protected our marriage.””

He laughed.

“Marriage?””

Vanessa walked behind him and smiled at the crowd.

“Adrian already made his choice.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian stood.

“Everyone here deserves to know the truth.””

He picked up the microphone from the birthday stage.

“My wife has forgotten who pays for her lifestyle.””

The room watched.

“My house. My money. My name.””

His father, Richard Cole, laughed from his seat.

“She should be grateful we allowed her into this family.””

I looked at the birthday cake beside the stage.

Thirty candles.

A photograph of Adrian and me from our wedding day placed beside it.

A memory of two people who no longer existed.

Vanessa leaned close to my ear.

Her perfume was sweet.

Her words were poison.

“He signed the divorce papers this morning.””

I froze.

“He what?””

“He’s done with you.””

She smiled.

“You’re leaving tonight.””

Adrian nodded toward the guards.

“Bring her suitcase downstairs.””

One guard immediately moved.

The other hesitated.

Then his radio suddenly crackled.

Everyone heard the voice coming through.

“Sir, there’s a problem at the front gate.””

Adrian frowned.

“What problem?””

The guard touched his earpiece.

“The gates just closed automatically.””

A strange silence filled the ballroom.

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

“Open them.””

The guard swallowed.

“We tried.””

“And?””

His face turned pale.

“Someone overrode the security system.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Who?””

The guard looked toward the massive glass doors.

“Sir…”

The sound of engines echoed outside.

Several vehicles.

Black vehicles.

Moving into the driveway.

Then the guard whispered the words that made Adrian’s expression change completely.

“There’s someone here asking for Emily Parker.””

My heartbeat slowed.

May you like

Because nobody had called me by that name in years.

And Adrian had no idea who was coming through those gates.
