Chapter 9: What My Father Knew

The folder felt heavier than it should have.

It was just paper.

But when I held it, I felt like I was holding a piece of my father’s final days.

The man who had always seemed impossible to break.

The man who had spent his life protecting me.

“Why didn’t you come sooner?”” I asked Claire.

She looked down.

“Because your father asked me not to.””

Rachel stepped beside me.

“Not to?””

Claire nodded.

“He knew if the wrong person discovered the documents existed, they would disappear.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Sarah…”

I turned toward him.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I wanted to see his reaction.

He looked confused.

Almost hurt.

“You knew about this?””

“No.””

Claire answered before I could.

“Daniel did not.””

That surprised everyone.

Claire continued.

“Your father trusted very few people.””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Clearly.””

The comment was sharp.

Michael deserved it.

But Claire ignored him.

She opened the folder.

Inside were copies of handwritten notes.

My father’s handwriting.

I recognized it instantly.

My throat tightened.

The first page began:

*Sarah, if you are reading this, someone has tried to take what was never theirs.*

I covered my mouth.

Emma came closer.

“Mom?””

I looked at her.

“It’s Grandpa.””

She sat beside me.

Claire continued.

“Your father predicted this situation.””

Daniel frowned.

“Predicted someone would attack the trust?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because he noticed patterns.””

“What patterns?””

“People becoming interested in Sarah’s assets after learning about the trust.””

My eyes moved to Daniel.

Not because he was guilty.

Because I remembered.

How many people had suddenly appeared after my father died?

How many conversations had changed?

How many smiles had hidden questions?

Claire turned another page.

“There is a section specifically about Daniel.””

Everyone went still.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“About me?””

“Yes.””

I watched him carefully.

Claire read:

“Daniel appears to love my daughter. However, love must be proven through actions, not promises.””

Daniel looked away.

The words hurt him.

Because my father had been right.

Claire continued.

“My concern is not that Daniel will intentionally harm Sarah. My concern is that he may allow others to influence him.””

Nobody spoke.

Not even Daniel.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Olivia didn’t force him to abandon us.

She convinced him.

And he let her.

Claire closed the page.

“There’s more.””

She pulled out another document.

“This was recorded six months before your father died.””

“What is it?””

“A warning.””

She placed a small envelope on the table.

My name was written across it.

*For Sarah. Open only if the trust is threatened.*

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My father’s final words to me.

I read silently.

Then my eyes stopped at one sentence.

*If someone tells you that you have no power because you never used your inheritance, remember this: quiet does not mean weak.*

Tears filled my eyes.

Emma touched my arm.

“Mom.””

I smiled through them.

“He knew.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“So Olivia knew about all of this?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because someone inside your company gave her information.””

Michael looked down.

Daniel’s face tightened.

The guilt was unbearable.

Then Claire pulled out another file.

“This is why I came tonight.””

“What is it?””

She opened it.

Inside was a contract.

A transfer agreement.

My name.

Emma’s name.

And one more signature.

Olivia’s.

I stared.

“She tried to transfer control of the trust?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

Claire pointed to the date.

Yesterday.

The same day Daniel threw us out.

The same day Olivia told me I didn’t belong.

She wasn’t just humiliating me.

She was trying to steal everything.

My phone buzzed.

Martin.

I answered immediately.

“Sarah.””

His voice was urgent.

“Where are you?””

“Rachel’s.””

“Good. Stay there.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because Olivia just filed an emergency claim against the trust.””

My stomach dropped.

“What claim?””

“She’s claiming Sarah is mentally unfit to control the assets.””

The room went silent.

Daniel looked shocked.

“She did what?””

Martin continued.

“And Sarah…”

“What?””

“She attached evidence.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What evidence?””

Martin hesitated.

Then said:

“Videos of you arguing with Daniel.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew exactly what Olivia was trying to do.

She wasn’t just trying to take the house.

She was trying to make me look unstable.

And before I could respond, Emma’s phone suddenly lit up.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

May you like

Three words.

*I know everything.*
