Chapter 12: The Secret My Father Left

The world seemed to stop.

“What does Emma have to do with this?””

Martin didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

“Martin.””

“Your father added a protection clause.””

“You said that.””

“Not the full clause.””

I looked at Emma.

She was laughing softly with Rachel.

Completely unaware.

“What protection clause?””

Martin lowered his voice.

“Your father believed someone might eventually target you through Emma.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Emma was the only person who could inherit the trust after you.””

I closed my eyes.

“So he protected her.””

“Yes.””

“From what?””

“From anyone attempting to manipulate you.””

A chill moved through me.

Then I remembered the message.

*I know everything.*

Someone wasn’t just threatening me.

They were watching Emma.

I walked toward her.

“Emma.””

She looked up.

“What happened?””

I hugged her.

Too tightly.

She noticed.

“Mom?””

“I need you to tell me something.””

“What?””

“Has anyone contacted you recently?””

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

My heart dropped.

“Emma.””

She looked away.

“No.””

I waited.

She sighed.

“There was one message.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“What message?””

Emma looked embarrassed.

“Someone asked me questions.””

“What questions?””

“About Grandpa.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you answer?””

“No.””

“Emma.””

She looked hurt.

“Mom, I didn’t know it was important.””

I softened immediately.

“Baby, you did the right thing.””

She pulled out her phone.

“I saved it.””

I took the phone.

The conversation was short.

Unknown number.

*Your grandfather left something for you.*

Emma replied:

*Who are you?*

The answer:

*Someone who wants to make sure you receive what belongs to you.*

Then:

*Ask your mother about the red folder.*

I looked at Martin.

“The red folder?””

He went silent.

“Martin?””

“Sarah…”

“What?””

“Your father kept one final file separate from the trust records.””

“Where?””

“We never found it.””

I looked at Emma’s phone.

Someone else had.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What’s happening?””

I turned toward him.

“Someone is looking for something my father hid.””

His face tightened.

“Who?””

Before anyone answered, another message arrived.

This time directly to me.

I opened it.

One photo.

A picture of my house.

Taken from across the street.

Taken that morning.

My hands went cold.

Below it was a message.

*You should have stayed away.*

Rachel looked over my shoulder.

“Sarah…”

Daniel grabbed the phone.

His face changed.

Because he recognized the street.

“Where did this come from?””

I looked at him.

“You know?””

“No.””

But his voice was uncertain.

Then another message appeared.

*Ask Daniel about the night your father died.*

I stared at him.

The air disappeared.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked terrified.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You know something.””

“I don’t.””

“Then why are you scared?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was the moment I realized something.

Olivia wasn’t the only person who had secrets.

Daniel had one too.

A secret connected to my father.

A secret he had buried for years.

And when he finally spoke, the words changed everything.

“Your father didn’t die believing he could trust me.””

May you like

He looked at me.

“He died believing I betrayed him.””
