Chapter 7: The Person Behind The Password
I stared at the name on my phone until the letters blurred.
I read it again.
Then again.
Because my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.
*Michael Davis.*
Daniel’s younger brother.
My brother-in-law.
The man who had stood beside us at our wedding.
The man who had carried Emma on his shoulders when she was little.
The man who had called me “family.””
“No,” Daniel whispered.
He had seen my face.
“What?””
I handed him the phone.
The moment he read the name, all the color disappeared from his face.
“Michael?””
Olivia looked between us.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
“Who is Michael?””
Daniel looked at her sharply.
“You know exactly who he is.””
She looked away.
That tiny movement told me everything.
Rachel had been right from the beginning.
The truth was never hidden because it was complicated.
It was hidden because someone wanted it hidden.
I called Martin immediately.
“Tell me you’re wrong.””
“I wish I could.””
“What evidence do you have?””
“There are login records.””
“From Michael?””
“Yes.””
Daniel stood up.
“No. My brother wouldn’t do this.””
Martin’s voice remained calm.
“Daniel, I’m not making assumptions. I’m telling you what the records show.””
“When?””
“Three different dates.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Dates?””
Martin continued.
“The first was shortly after Olivia began working with your company.””
Daniel went quiet.
The second date.
I knew before Martin said it.
“The second was the week you started discussing removing Sarah from the property.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“And the third?””
A pause.
“The third was yesterday.””
My stomach tightened.
After he threw us out.
While Emma and I were sleeping at Rachel’s apartment.
Someone had accessed my family’s documents.
Someone had tried to erase my ownership.
Daniel slowly sat down.
“I need to talk to him.””
“No,” I said.
Both Daniel and Olivia looked at me.
I continued.
“You need to understand something.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
“Your brother already knew what he was doing.””
“I don’t believe that.””
“Then look at the evidence.””
Daniel looked at the table.
For years, I had watched him defend people.
His employees.
His friends.
His family.
But this time, defending them was destroying him.
Olivia stood suddenly.
“I’m leaving.””
Daniel looked up.
“No.””
She froze.
“You don’t get to walk away.””
A small smile appeared on her face.
“Now you want answers?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
“You never wanted answers before.””
That hurt because it was true.
Daniel had chosen what was comfortable.
He chose the version of Olivia that made him feel successful.
The version where I was the problem.
The version where Emma was a burden.
I watched him struggle with the weight of it.
Then Olivia turned to me.
“You think you won.””
I didn’t respond.
She stepped closer.
“You think owning a house makes you powerful?””
“No.””
My voice stayed calm.
“But protecting my daughter does.””
Something flickered in her eyes.
Anger.
Good.
Because anger made people careless.
Michael arrived at Daniel’s office the next morning.
He walked in smiling.
That smile disappeared when he saw me.
“You’re here.””
“Yes.””
He looked at Daniel.
“What’s going on?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I placed the documents on the desk.
Michael looked down.
Then up.
“You went through my files?””
“No.””
Martin’s investigator had printed everything.
“Your access history did.””
Michael’s face tightened.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Michael.””
His voice sounded broken.
“Why?””
Michael looked at him.
And that was the moment.
The moment when a person decides whether to keep lying.
Michael chose silence.
“Say something.””
Michael sighed.
“You wouldn’t understand.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Try me.””
“You had everything.””
The room went quiet.
Michael continued.
“You had Dad’s approval. You had the company. You had the perfect wife.””
His eyes moved to me.
“You had Sarah.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“This was jealousy?””
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“It was always supposed to be mine.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“Dad promised me I’d be involved.””
“You were.””
“As an employee.””
“You were my partner.””
“Your partner?””
Michael laughed.
“You signed my checks.””
Daniel stepped back.
I had never seen him look at his brother that way.
Like he was seeing a stranger.
“You helped Olivia.””
Michael looked away.
“She came to me first.””
My hands tightened.
“What did she offer you?””
Silence.
Then:
“A position.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“She promised you my company.””
Michael didn’t answer.
That was enough.
The betrayal finally had a face.
Not just Olivia.
Not just greed.
A family member.
Daniel sat down slowly.
“My own brother.””
Michael looked guilty for the first time.
But it didn’t change anything.
Then his phone rang.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
Fear.
He declined the call.
A second later, it rang again.
Daniel noticed.
“Who is that?””
Michael didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Answer it.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Because then everyone heard it.
The voicemail notification.
A message waiting.
Michael looked at the phone like it was a bomb.
Daniel reached for it.
Michael grabbed his wrist.
Too fast.
Too desperate.
May you like
And that was when we knew.
The person calling wasn’t someone Michael wanted us to hear.
