Chapter 14: The Last Move

The moment Martin said Emma’s name, I felt every muscle in my body tighten.

“No.””

“Sarah, listen.””

“No.””

I walked away from Daniel.

“My daughter had nothing to do with this.””

“We know.””

“Then why is her name attached?””

“Because Olivia created a false account using Emma’s identity.””

I closed my eyes.

The pattern was obvious.

Olivia wasn’t just stealing money.

She was creating evidence.

Making it look like Emma was involved.

Making it look like I was unstable.

Making it look like my family was the problem.

“She’s trying to frame my daughter.””

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“Olivia used Emma’s identity.””

His face changed instantly.

“No.””

That reaction was real.

For the first time, I saw the man Emma used to love.

The man who had taught her to ride a bike.

The man who had once promised to protect her.

“We need to find her.””

Martin interrupted.

“Actually, she contacted us.””

“What?””

“She requested a private meeting.””

“Why?””

“She says she has information.””

Rachel crossed her arms.

“That sounds like a trap.””

“It probably is,” Martin said.

I looked at the folder.

My father’s words.

Protect yourself.

Protect Emma.

But sometimes protection meant walking into the fire.

“Where?””

Martin gave me the location.

An old warehouse near downtown.

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

“You’re not going alone.””

“I didn’t ask you to come.””

“I know.””

That surprised me.

“I’m not coming because you trust me.””

He paused.

“I’m coming because Emma deserves someone to stand up for her.””

The words hurt.

Because he was right.

The warehouse was empty when we arrived.

Too empty.

The lights flickered.

The air smelled like dust.

Then Olivia appeared from the shadows.

She looked different.

No designer confidence.

No perfect smile.

Just exhaustion.

“You came.””

I stayed near the entrance.

“You wanted this meeting.””

She looked at Daniel.

“You brought him.””

“Yes.””

She laughed softly.

“Of course.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is the evidence?””

Olivia looked at him.

“You still think this is about money.””

“What else?””

She looked at me.

“It was never just about money.””

I didn’t answer.

She continued.

“Your father ruined everything.””

My eyes narrowed.

“My father?””

“He knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That people like us would never be accepted.””

I stared at her.

There it was.

The excuse.

The story she told herself.

“I worked harder than Sarah.””

“You barely knew me.””

“I knew enough.””

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“You studied me.””

She looked away.

For a second, she looked almost ashamed.

Then it disappeared.

“I deserved more.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You destroyed everyone around you.””

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You did.””

That hit him.

“You wanted success. I gave you a path.””

“You manipulated me.””

“I showed you what you wanted.””

Silence.

Then Olivia reached into her bag.

She pulled out a flash drive.

“This is everything.””

Daniel stared.

“What is it?””

“Every transfer. Every message. Every person involved.””

“Why give it to us?””

She smiled sadly.

“Because Michael betrayed me.””

I almost laughed.

“Betrayed you?””

“Yes.””

“After everything?””

“He tried to take control without me.””

The irony was unbelievable.

The people who built their relationship on betrayal had betrayed each other.

“Where’s Michael?””

Olivia looked toward the exit.

“He’s gone.””

Then the lights shut off.

Completely.

A second later, a car alarm sounded outside.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Move.””

We rushed toward the door.

When the lights returned, Olivia was gone.

Only the flash drive remained.

And on the wall behind where she stood was a message written in black ink.

*YOU STILL DON’T KNOW THE WHOLE TRUTH.*

The flash drive contained hundreds of files.

Enough to destroy Olivia.

Enough to expose Michael.

But one folder stopped me.

Created date:

The day my father died.

The title:

*Daniel Davis — Final Conversation.*

I looked at Daniel.

His face went pale.

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

But he did.

Because he looked afraid.

I opened the folder.

Inside was an audio file.

My father’s voice appeared.

Weak.

Tired.

But clear.

“Daniel, if you’re hearing this, it means you made the wrong choice.””

Daniel covered his mouth.

The recording continued.

“You were given access because I trusted you.””

A pause.

Then:

“But someone convinced you that loyalty was something you could trade.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

My father’s final words echoed through the warehouse.

“Sarah deserves the truth.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then another file appeared automatically.

A video.

Recorded one hour before my father died.

May you like

And the person sitting across from him wasn’t Daniel.

It was someone I never expected.
