Chapter 8: The Final Warning

Daniel pulled his hand away.

“Who is calling you?””

Michael said nothing.

The silence became the answer.

I had spent years believing secrets were dangerous because of what they contained.

I was wrong.

Secrets were dangerous because of who protected them.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Unlock the phone.””

“No.””

“Michael.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

Not from anger.

Fear.

Rachel crossed her arms.

“I’m starting to think the phone is more honest than you.””

Michael glared at her.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said.

“We understand perfectly.””

Michael looked at me.

“You think I’m the villain.””

I held his gaze.

“You accessed my family’s trust.””

“I didn’t steal anything.””

“You helped someone who did.””

His face tightened.

Then he said something I didn’t expect.

“I was trying to stop her.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Michael looked exhausted.

“She went too far.””

“Who?””

“Olivia.””

The room changed.

Because suddenly, Michael wasn’t defending Olivia.

He was afraid of her.

“When did you realize?””

Michael looked down.

“Too late.””

He opened his phone.

The call history appeared.

The number had no name.

Only a series of repeated calls.

“She’s been calling me all morning.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

Michael swallowed.

“Because she knows I talked.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She knows?””

Michael nodded.

“She always knows.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What else did she plan?””

Michael hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

“What else?”” Daniel repeated.

Michael walked to the window.

“When she first approached me, she didn’t care about the company.””

“Then what did she care about?””

“The trust.””

My breath caught.

Michael continued.

“She knew your father left Sarah control of several assets.””

Daniel looked at me.

“She knew before you did.””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Then I remembered something.

The old paperwork.

The temporary access.

Daniel.

My husband had once helped organize documents after my father died.

And someone had learned from that.

Michael looked at Daniel.

“Your access wasn’t the only thing she used.””

Daniel froze.

“What do you mean?””

Michael turned around.

“Your assistant.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

“My assistant.””

He sat down.

“She handled archived files.””

Michael nodded.

“Olivia convinced her to copy documents.””

The betrayal kept expanding.

Every person connected to Daniel’s life seemed to have a thread leading back to Olivia.

“How much does she have?”” I asked.

Michael looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

“Guess.””

He hesitated.

“Enough to destroy people.””

Daniel stood.

“I need to find her.””

“No,” I said.

He looked at me.

“What?””

“She wants you angry.””

“She’s dangerous.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“And angry people make mistakes.””

Daniel stopped.

For the first time, he listened.

My phone rang.

Martin.

I answered.

“Sarah, we found something.””

“What?””

“The account transfer we discussed.””

“The fake signature?””

“No.””

His voice lowered.

“The real transfer.””

I stood still.

“What real transfer?””

“There was another document hidden behind the forged authorization.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Read it.””

Martin paused.

“Sarah, this document was signed before your father died.””

I gripped the phone.

“By who?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Your father.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What does it say?””

Martin’s voice became quieter.

“Your father created a condition inside the trust.””

“What condition?””

“That if anyone attempted to fraudulently transfer trust assets…”

I waited.

“…ownership control would immediately shift.””

“To who?””

Nobody in the room moved.

Not even Daniel.

Martin finished:

“To Emma.””

I stopped breathing.

My daughter.

The girl Daniel had thrown out.

The girl Olivia called a burden.

The girl they thought had no power.

“Sarah?””

I barely heard him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Emma is not just protected by the trust.””

I looked at my daughter.

“It means she controls it.””

That evening, I returned to Rachel’s apartment.

Emma was sitting at the kitchen table doing homework.

She looked up.

“Mom?””

I smiled softly.

“Hey.””

She studied my face.

“Something happened.””

I sat beside her.

“A lot happened.””

She waited.

I didn’t know how to explain that the people who hurt her were now afraid of her.

So I simply said:

“Your grandfather left something for you.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

Before I could answer, someone knocked.

Rachel looked toward the door.

Nobody expected visitors.

Then a voice came from outside.

“Sarah.””

My blood went cold.

Daniel.

But he wasn’t alone.

I opened the door slightly.

Michael stood behind him.

And beside Michael was someone I had never seen before.

A woman holding a folder.

Daniel looked at me.

“We need to talk.””

The woman stepped forward.

“My name is Claire Bennett.””

She handed me the folder.

“I was your father’s private accountant.””

I frowned.

“My father’s accountant died years ago.””

She nodded.

“That’s what everyone was told.””

My hand tightened around the folder.

“What are you saying?””

Claire looked past me at Emma.

Then back at me.

“I’m saying your father knew someone would try to take everything from you.””

May you like

She lowered her voice.

“And he left evidence.””
