Chapter 13: The Truth About My Father’s Last Night
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The courthouse steps.
The people walking past us.
The cars passing on the street.
Everything continued like normal.
But my world had stopped.
“Say that again.””
Daniel looked down.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“No.””
My voice came out colder than I expected.
“You don’t get to say something like that and then decide when I hear the rest.””
Emma looked between us.
“Mom?””
I immediately softened.
“Go with Rachel.””
“But—”
“Please.””
She saw my face.
She nodded.
Rachel took her away.
Only then did I turn back to Daniel.
“What happened the night my father died?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I was supposed to meet him.””
“Why?””
“He asked me to come to his office.””
“For what?””
Daniel looked away.
“To discuss the company.””
I laughed once.
A painful sound.
“My father was dying, and he wanted to discuss business?””
“He knew his time was limited.””
“Keep going.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“He knew people were trying to access the trust.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
“I didn’t know then.””
“And now?””
He didn’t answer.
That answer was enough.
“Daniel.””
“I was young.””
“You were thirty-five.””
“I thought I was helping.””
“With what?””
He looked at me.
“With making sure the company survived.””
I stared.
“You gave someone access.””
His silence confirmed it.
“Who?””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Michael.””
I felt like I had already heard that name too many times.
“My brother was under pressure. He thought your father would never let him control anything.””
“And you helped him?””
“I gave him access to old company files.””
“Which included trust information.””
“Yes.””
I stepped back.
“My father trusted you.””
“I know.””
“No. You don’t.””
My eyes burned.
“You stood at his funeral.””
“I know.””
“You held my hand.””
“I know.””
“Then you went home and kept the biggest secret of my life from me.””
Daniel looked destroyed.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That if I told you, you’d hate me.””
I almost whispered.
“And you were right.””
That night, I returned to the house.
Not because I wanted to.
Because Martin found something hidden inside my father’s old storage records.
Something connected to Daniel’s confession.
The house looked different.
Not because the walls changed.
Because I saw everything differently.
The rooms where Daniel had promised forever.
The kitchen where I cooked for people who eventually betrayed me.
The hallway where Emma had carried boxes after being told she didn’t belong.
I walked into my father’s old study.
Claire was waiting.
She placed a small red folder on the desk.
My breath caught.
“The red folder.””
She nodded.
“Your father hid it here.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew someone might search the obvious places.””
I opened it.
Inside were letters.
Photos.
And one document.
A handwritten note from my father.
*Daniel made a mistake. But mistakes are not the same as betrayal. What matters is what he chooses afterward.*
I stopped.
Claire watched me.
“He knew?””
“Yes.””
“He knew Daniel gave access?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because your father believed people could make terrible choices and still change.””
I looked at the note.
That sounded like him.
Always seeing the good in people.
Sometimes too much.
I turned the page.
Another sentence.
*But if Daniel chooses greed over honesty, Sarah must protect herself and Emma.*
My hands froze.
Because my father had seen the possibility.
He had known.
A sound came from the hallway.
Daniel.
“You found it.””
I turned.
“Yes.””
He looked at the folder.
Then at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The apology was different this time.
No excuses.
No defense.
Just regret.
“I can’t forgive you yet.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“But you’re going to help fix this.””
He looked surprised.
“How?””
“You know how Olivia operated.””
Daniel looked away.
“I know.””
“Then tell the truth.””
He nodded.
“I will.””
My phone rang.
Martin.
I answered.
“Sarah.””
His voice was urgent.
“We have a problem.””
“What now?””
“Olivia disappeared.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
“She withdrew from the court process.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“No.””
A pause.
“She also transferred the remaining funds from one of the hidden accounts.””
“To where?””
Martin hesitated.
“An account under a new identity.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Whose?””
May you like
Martin answered:
“Emma’s.””
