Chapter 11: The Recording
The courtroom became completely silent.
The attorney held a small device.
“A recording made three weeks ago.””
Martin immediately stood.
“Your Honor, we have not reviewed this evidence.””
The judge looked at Olivia’s attorney.
“Was this submitted properly?””
“Yes.””
The judge nodded.
“Play it.””
My heart started pounding.
The audio began.
At first, there was only background noise.
Then my voice.
“I can’t keep doing this.””
My own words.
But the conversation sounded unfamiliar.
Because I remembered saying those words.
Just not like this.
The audio continued.
“I’m tired of everyone depending on me.””
The attorney looked at the judge.
“This demonstrates emotional instability.””
Martin shook his head.
“Let it play.””
The recording continued.
My voice again.
“I sacrificed everything for this family.””
Then Daniel’s voice.
“You always think you’re the victim.””
My chest tightened.
The night came back.
The argument.
The pain.
But the recording cut out the beginning.
The part where Daniel told Emma she wasn’t his real daughter.
The part where Olivia mocked us.
The part where he threw her suitcase by the door.
The attorney paused the recording.
“Your Honor, this is the behavior my client is concerned about.””
I looked at Olivia.
She wasn’t watching the judge.
She was watching Daniel.
Because she wanted him to break.
But he didn’t.
Daniel stood.
“That’s not the whole conversation.””
The attorney turned.
“Mr. Davis, you are not required to defend your wife.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I’m not defending her.””
He looked at me.
“I’m telling the truth.””
The courtroom went quiet.
Daniel continued.
“My wife was reacting to what I did.””
Olivia’s face hardened.
“Daniel.””
He ignored her.
“I asked Sarah and Emma to leave the house.””
The judge looked up.
“Why?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Because I believed it was mine.””
“And was it?””
“No.””
The answer came quickly.
“No, it wasn’t.””
Olivia’s attorney stepped forward.
“Mr. Davis, are you changing your testimony?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I’m correcting it.””
That sentence hit harder than anything.
Because for years, Daniel had been protecting the wrong person.
Now he was finally protecting the truth.
Martin presented another document.
“The recording also fails to include a key fact.””
The judge looked at him.
“What fact?””
“That Ms. Whitmore Davis had discovered financial misconduct involving Ms. Mercer.””
Olivia’s attorney objected.
“Allegations.””
“Evidence,” Martin corrected.
The judge allowed it.
The financial records appeared.
Transfers.
Dates.
Company accounts.
Olivia’s attorney became quieter.
But then Olivia herself stood.
“I have something to say.””
Her attorney tried to stop her.
She pulled away.
“I’m tired of being blamed for everything.””
The judge looked at her.
“You may speak through your attorney.””
“No.””
Olivia looked directly at me.
“I want her to hear this.””
I stared back.
“You destroyed my life.””
The courtroom froze.
Olivia continued.
“You walked into a world you didn’t build and took everything.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
She truly believed this.
“You think you’re innocent because you had money?””
“No.””
“Because your father protected you?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
I answered quietly.
“Because I didn’t steal from people.””
Her face tightened.
For a moment, the mask disappeared.
And behind it was anger.
Pure anger.
The judge ordered everyone to sit.
The hearing continued for another hour.
At the end, the judge made a temporary decision.
The trust would not be transferred.
My control remained.
But the investigation would continue.
Outside the courtroom, Daniel stood silently.
“You were right.””
I looked at him.
“About what?””
“About Olivia.””
I didn’t respond.
He stepped closer.
“I know that doesn’t fix anything.””
“No.””
“It doesn’t.””
He nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Martin.
I answered.
“Sarah.””
His voice sounded different.
Not worried.
Shocked.
“What happened?””
“We found the original trust files.””
“Where?””
“In a hidden storage account.””
I frowned.
“What’s strange about that?””
A pause.
Then:
“The files were accessed yesterday.””
“By who?””
Martin lowered his voice.
“Someone using Emma’s information.””
My blood ran cold.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
I looked toward Emma.
She was standing with Rachel near the courthouse entrance.
Safe.
Or so I thought.
May you like
Then Martin said:
“Sarah, we need to talk about what your father knew about Emma.””
