Chapter 9: The Man Who Owned The Secret
Footsteps echoed through the house.
Slow.
Confident.
Not someone trying to hide.
Someone who wanted us to know they were there.
My father moved in front of me.
A protective instinct I had known my entire life.
But this time, I stepped beside him.
I wasn’t a child anymore.
The footsteps stopped.
Then a familiar voice called from downstairs.
“Daniel.””
My blood ran cold.
My uncle.
Richard.
My father’s face became unreadable.
“Stay here.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Clara.””
“I’m tired of staying behind.””
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to argue.
Then he nodded.
We walked downstairs together.
Richard stood in the entryway.
He looked exactly as he always did.
Perfect suit.
Silver hair.
Calm smile.
That was the terrifying thing.
He looked normal.
Like he hadn’t destroyed lives.
Like he hadn’t watched my wedding collapse.
“Hello, Clara.””
I stared at him.
“How long?””
His smile faded slightly.
“How long what?””
“How long have you been pretending?””
Richard sighed.
“Your father always did make you emotional.””
My father stepped forward.
“Leave.””
Richard ignored him.
“You really think you understand what happened?””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Richard looked at me.
“Because you don’t.””
I walked closer.
“Then explain.””
He looked at my father.
“You built Sterling Capital on my work.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
Richard’s voice became sharper.
“I found the first investors. I created the first network.””
“And you betrayed every person who trusted you.””
Richard smiled.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The moral speech.””
He looked around the house.
“You think money comes from being good.””
“No.””
My father’s voice was cold.
“Money comes from responsibility.””
Richard laughed.
“And that is why you always beat me.””
The admission surprised me.
“You were jealous.””
Richard looked at me.
“I was ignored.””
“No.””
My father shook his head.
“You were given opportunities.””
“And you got everything.””
Richard pointed at me.
“Even her.””
My stomach turned.
“Me?””
He looked at me.
“You were the key.””
I stepped back.
“What does that mean?””
Richard smiled.
“Your father never told you?””
My father’s voice changed.
“Don’t.””
Richard continued anyway.
“When your mother was pregnant, your grandfather changed the inheritance structure.””
I stared.
“What inheritance?””
Richard looked pleased.
“Everything.””
The room went silent.
“My grandfather left me nothing?””
“He left you enough,” my father said.
Richard laughed.
“He left everything connected to Sterling Capital to Clara.””
I felt dizzy.
“What?””
My father looked away.
And that was all the confirmation I needed.
“You never told me.””
“I wanted you to have a normal life.””
Richard smiled.
“Exactly.””
He looked at me.
“That’s why I needed to change things.””
My voice shook.
“You destroyed Julian’s company because of an inheritance?””
“Not just that.””
He stepped closer.
“I needed Julian desperate.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“Because desperate people make mistakes.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you do?””
Richard smiled.
“I gave him a choice.””
My stomach tightened.
“What choice?””
Richard pulled out his phone.
He tapped the screen.
Then held it up.
A contract appeared.
Julian’s signature.
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Richard looked at me.
“He agreed.””
My father grabbed the phone.
“What is this?””
Richard smiled.
“A transfer agreement.””
I couldn’t breathe.
Julian had signed something.
Something involving the company.
Something involving me.
Richard looked at me.
“Your husband was never the victim you think he was.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
But a horrible thought entered my mind.
Because Julian had lied.
He had hidden things.
He had kept secrets.
Richard turned toward the door.
“You’ll understand soon.””
“Where are you going?””
He stopped.
Then smiled.
“Ask your husband why he signed away control of the company.””
My phone buzzed.
A message from Julian.
One sentence.
I never wanted you to find out this way.
Then another message appeared.
A photo.
Julian standing in a lawyer’s office.
Signing the same contract Richard had shown us.
May you like
And below the picture was a message from an unknown number.
“He chose the company over you.””
