Chapter 6: The Warning

My father locked every door in the house.

That was when I knew he was truly afraid.

Not worried.

Not cautious.

Afraid.

I had seen my father negotiate billion-dollar deals without blinking.

I had seen him handle angry investors, impossible deadlines, and public scandals.

But that night, he checked every window himself.

Every lock.

Every camera.

“Dad,” I said quietly.

He looked at me.

“When did this become dangerous?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

It had been dangerous for longer than I realized.

My mother sat at the kitchen table, holding a cup of tea she never drank.

“She should have told us.””

My father looked at her.

“Who?””

“Beatrice.””

He nodded.

“She crossed a line.””

I walked toward them.

“I need the whole truth.””

Neither of them spoke.

So I continued.

“No more protecting me.””

My father looked down.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.””

He opened another file.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

“This started before your engagement.””

I picked up the first photo.

Beatrice at a business event.

Beside her was Ethan.

Then Julian.

“Why was Ethan involved?””

My father answered.

“Because Ethan introduced Beatrice to the people who could damage Julian’s company.””

My stomach turned.

“So they worked together.””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

My father looked at me.

“To gain control.””

I stared.

“Control of what?””

“Whitmore Technologies.””

I looked confused.

“But why?””

My father pointed to a document.

“Because Julian’s company owns a patent.””

I read the page.

A technology patent.

Something valuable.

Something worth millions.

“Beatrice wanted the company.””

“Yes.””

“And Julian?””

My father’s expression changed.

“He was supposed to be a temporary owner.””

The words felt cruel.

“Temporary?””

“Until the right people could force him out.””

I thought about Julian.

His ambition.

His pride.

His belief that he had built everything himself.

A terrible realization formed.

“He was being used too.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

That didn’t erase what he did.

But it explained why everything had fallen apart so quickly.

My phone buzzed.

Julian.

I answered.

“Are you safe?””

His first words surprised me.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

There was panic in his voice.

“Clara, listen carefully.””

“What happened?””

“I found the original company files.””

“And?””

“They were never meant to fail.””

I stood.

“What?””

“My mother changed the financial reports.””

“Why?””

“To make investors lose confidence.””

My father reached for the phone.

I put it on speaker.

Julian continued.

“She wanted the company value to drop.””

“So she could buy it cheaply.””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Then Julian said:

“But there’s something worse.””

“What?””

A pause.

“The wedding.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

“She didn’t push you because she was angry.””

My hand went cold.

“Then why?””

Julian’s voice lowered.

“She wanted everyone to see you as unstable.””

I didn’t understand.

“What?””

“She planned to use the wedding footage.””

My father’s expression changed.

“What footage?””

Julian answered.

“To make it look like you caused a scene.””

The blood drained from my face.

“She wanted to destroy my reputation.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Another silence.

Then Julian said:

“Because after the wedding, she planned to convince you to sign something.””

“What something?””

His answer came slowly.

“Your inheritance rights.””

I froze.

My father stood.

“What did you say?””

Julian repeated.

“She wanted Clara to sign away any claim connected to Sterling Capital.””

The room went completely silent.

Because suddenly everything made sense.

The insults.

The humiliation.

The fake kindness.

Beatrice never wanted me to marry Julian.

She wanted access.

And when that failed…

She wanted me gone.

Then someone knocked on the front door.

Everyone froze.

It was almost midnight.

My father reached for his phone.

The knock came again.

Three slow taps.

Then a voice from outside.

“Clara.””

I recognized it immediately.

Beatrice.

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Don’t open that door.””

But Beatrice spoke again.

And this time, her voice was different.

Not arrogant.

Not cruel.

Desperate.

“Clara, please.””

A pause.

“I need to tell you what your father did.””

My father went completely still.

May you like

Because whatever Beatrice was about to reveal…

He already knew it would change everything.
