Chapter 13: The Night Before The Wedding

The room went silent.

Not the kind of silence that comes from peace.

The kind that comes when everyone is waiting for something painful.

I looked at Julian.

“Tell me.””

His eyes stayed on the floor.

“Clara…”

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“I’m done finding out pieces of my own life from other people.””

Richard smiled from across the room.

“Finally.””

My father stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But I stopped him.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“I need to hear this.””

Julian swallowed.

Then he nodded.

“The night before our wedding, Richard came to see me.””

I waited.

“What did he want?””

Julian looked at the floor.

“He wanted me to call off the wedding.””

My heart tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he knew your father was the investor.””

I stared.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“A few days before.””

The betrayal came back.

Not as a wave.

As something colder.

“You knew my family helped you.””

Julian nodded.

“I found out when my lawyer reviewed the funding documents.””

“And you still didn’t tell me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because Richard convinced me you would leave.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He told me your father would never accept me.””

Julian’s voice cracked.

“He said I would always be the man who needed your family’s money.””

I looked away.

Because I knew that fear.

Julian had always been proud.

Maybe too proud.

But fear did not excuse betrayal.

“So what happened that night?””

Julian took a breath.

“Richard offered me a deal.””

The room became still again.

“He said if I signed temporary control of the company to him, he would make sure your family never found out about the financial problems.””

I stared.

“And you considered it.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“I thought I was protecting everything.””

“You were protecting yourself.””

Julian looked down.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Then he continued.

“But I changed my mind.””

“When?””

“The morning of our wedding.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because I saw you.””

I said nothing.

“I watched you walk into the room. You were smiling. You trusted me.””

His voice became quieter.

“And I realized I was becoming exactly what I was afraid of.””

For a moment, I saw the man I had loved.

Not the perfect husband.

Not the successful businessman.

Just a man who had made terrible choices.

“What did you sign?””

Julian reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a copy of the agreement.

My father took it.

He read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

My father handed it to me.

I scanned the document.

It wasn’t the transfer agreement Richard had claimed.

It was different.

At the bottom was Julian’s signature.

And underneath it, a handwritten note.

“I agree only if Clara Sterling’s interests remain protected.””

I looked at Julian.

“You added this?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Richard threatened you.””

I looked at Richard.

His face was unreadable.

“He said if I exposed him, he would destroy your family’s reputation.””

My father stepped forward.

“He was bluffing.””

Julian nodded.

“I know that now.””

The painful part was that he hadn’t known then.

He had been scared.

And scared people could do damage.

Security arrived moments later.

Richard was escorted away.

But before he left, he looked at me.

“You think this changes everything?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew it didn’t.

After Richard was gone, Julian stood across from me.

No excuses.

No defenses.

Just regret.

“I know I hurt you.””

“Yes.””

“I know sorry isn’t enough.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.””

That surprised me.

Because for once, he wasn’t asking for something.

“I need time.””

“I understand.””

I turned away.

Then stopped.

“Julian?””

“Yes?””

“If you loved me…”

He looked at me.

“Why didn’t you trust me?””

His eyes filled.

And his answer was the one thing I wasn’t prepared for.

“Because I spent my whole life trying to prove I was worthy of people like you.””

I stared at him.

“And I forgot that you never asked me to prove anything.””

That night, I left with my family.

Not because I hated Julian.

Because I needed to remember who I was without him.

But three days later, something happened that changed everything again.

The police contacted us.

They had found Richard’s final file.

And inside was a message addressed only to me.

The first sentence made my hands shake.

“Clara, your father lied about one more thing.””
