Chapter 8: The Name On The Contract

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was trying to understand.

My entire life had been built on trust.

Trust my parents.

Trust Julian.

Trust the people who said they loved me.

And now every person I trusted had a secret.

The next morning, my father was already in his office.

The door was open.

That meant he wanted me to come in.

I walked inside.

He looked tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

“I owe you an explanation.””

I sat across from him.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“When I discovered Julian’s company was being attacked, I investigated.””

“Without telling me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

That answer surprised me.

“Of what?””

He looked at the papers in front of him.

“That you would choose love over safety.””

I stared.

“Dad.””

“I know.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I know that sounds controlling.””

“It does.””

He accepted that.

“But I had seen families destroy themselves over money.””

“So you decided to control the situation.””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

It hurt because I understood.

But understanding didn’t erase the damage.

“What did you find?””

He opened a file.

“Ethan was moving money through several accounts.””

“Beatrice?””

“Part of it.””

“Part of it?””

My father nodded.

“She wasn’t the leader.””

I remembered Beatrice’s words.

Someone inside my family.

“Who?””

Before he answered, the office door opened.

My mother stood there.

Her face was pale.

“Daniel.””

My father looked up.

“What?””

She held a piece of paper.

“I found this in the old files.””

My father stood.

“What is it?””

She handed it to him.

He read it.

Then slowly sat down.

I watched the change in his face.

“What?””

He passed it to me.

The document was from twenty years ago.

A business partnership agreement.

Between Sterling Capital and another investor.

I scanned the names.

Then stopped.

Because one name was familiar.

Very familiar.

“Mom?””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t know.””

The signature belonged to my uncle.

My father’s younger brother.

Richard Sterling.

My uncle.

The man who attended my wedding.

The man who hugged me and told me I looked beautiful.

The man who sat at my father’s table.

I looked at my father.

“Your brother?””

He nodded slowly.

“I thought he was gone.””

“What does that mean?””

My father looked at the contract.

“Richard left the company years ago after a disagreement.””

“What kind of disagreement?””

“He believed the company belonged to him.””

I stared.

“And now?””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“Now he believes it still does.””

My phone rang.

Julian.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

His voice was tense.

“I found Ethan.””

My body stiffened.

“Where?””

“An old office building downtown.””

“Is he alone?””

“No.””

Something in his voice changed.

“Julian?””

“There’s someone with him.””

“Who?””

Silence.

Then:

“Your uncle.””

My hand went cold.

My father stood immediately.

“What happened?””

I put the phone on speaker.

Julian continued.

“They’re looking through company records.””

My father grabbed his jacket.

“Stay there.””

“Mr. Sterling, wait.””

Julian’s voice became urgent.

“There’s more.””

My father stopped.

“What?””

Julian hesitated.

“Ethan has been recording everything.””

I frowned.

“Recording what?””

“The entire plan.””

A strange silence followed.

Then Julian said:

“He recorded Beatrice.””

My father looked at me.

“And?””

Julian’s voice dropped.

“He recorded Richard too.””

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly the story was bigger than Julian’s company.

Bigger than our wedding.

Bigger than Beatrice.

My uncle had been hiding in the shadows.

And now we finally knew who had been pulling the strings.

My father grabbed his keys.

“We go now.””

But before we left, my phone received one final message.

From Ethan.

No words.

Only a video.

I pressed play.

The screen showed my uncle sitting across from Beatrice.

Then his voice filled the room.

“You did exactly what I needed.””

Beatrice looked nervous.

“What about Clara?””

My uncle smiled.

“She’s the last piece.””

The video ended.

And beneath it was one sentence.

“He knows you found out.””

I looked at my father.

“Who knows?””

May you like

Before he answered, the front door downstairs slammed shut.

Someone was already inside.
