Chapter 7: The Truth At The Door
Nobody moved.
The entire house seemed to hold its breath.
My father stood in the hallway, staring at the front door like he was looking at a ghost.
Beatrice knocked again.
“Clara, I know you’re inside.””
Her voice was softer now.
Almost human.
That was the most terrifying part.
Because I knew what she was capable of when she smiled.
My father stepped closer to the door.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Dad.””
“She doesn’t get to walk in here and rewrite the story.””
But Beatrice heard him.
“I’m not here to rewrite anything, Daniel.””
My father froze.
She had called him by his first name.
Not Mr. Sterling.
Not sir.
Daniel.
Like they had known each other for years.
Because they had.
I opened the door before my father could stop me.
Beatrice stood outside.
She wasn’t wearing the elegant clothes from the wedding.
No designer gown.
No diamonds.
No perfect makeup.
She looked exhausted.
Older.
For the first time, she looked like someone who had lost control.
Her eyes moved to the bandage on my cheek.
For one second, guilt flashed across her face.
Then it disappeared.
“Clara.””
I stepped back.
“Why are you here?””
She looked past me at my father.
“I need to speak with you.””
My father’s voice was cold.
“You’ve done enough.””
Beatrice ignored him.
“You don’t understand what you’re involved in.””
I almost laughed.
“Really?””
I touched the bandage.
“After everything you did, you think I’m the one who doesn’t understand?””
Her expression tightened.
“I never wanted you hurt.””
“Your hands pushed me.””
“I lost control.””
“That’s not an excuse.””
For once, she had nothing to say.
My father crossed his arms.
“Leave.””
Beatrice looked at him.
“You still think you know everything.””
The room went quiet.
My father’s expression changed slightly.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at me.
“Your father didn’t tell you.””
My stomach tightened.
I hated those words.
Because everyone seemed to have a secret.
Everyone except me.
“Tell me what?””
Beatrice looked between us.
“Your father knew Julian’s company was being targeted before he invested.””
My father didn’t react.
But I noticed.
A small movement.
A pause.
Beatrice saw it too.
“You knew.””
My father said nothing.
I turned toward him.
“Dad?””
He sighed.
“Clara.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Not again.””
Beatrice stepped closer.
“I’m not the only person who lied to you.””
My father looked at her sharply.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“You protected your daughter by hiding the truth. I protected my family the same way.””
I stared at her.
“You are comparing yourself to my father?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I’m telling you that powerful families don’t become powerful by being innocent.””
The words stayed with me.
Because they sounded like something my father would never say.
My father opened the door wider.
“Get out.””
Beatrice looked at me one last time.
Then she reached into her purse.
She pulled out an envelope.
“This belongs to you.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“A copy of the agreement your father made with Julian.””
My heart stopped.
“What agreement?””
My father immediately stepped forward.
“Beatrice.””
She smiled sadly.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“The panic.””
My father grabbed the envelope.
But I took it first.
“Clara.””
I looked at him.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
I opened it.
The first page was dated two years earlier.
Before Julian proposed.
Before our engagement.
Before I ever knew anything was wrong.
My eyes moved across the document.
Then stopped.
There was one sentence highlighted.
“Daniel Sterling agrees to provide financial support under the condition that Julian Whitmore protects Clara Sterling’s interests and maintains complete transparency regarding his company.””
I looked up.
“What is this?””
My father was silent.
Beatrice answered.
“A test.””
I frowned.
“A test?””
“Your father wanted proof that Julian loved you more than your money.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
I looked at my father.
“Is that true?””
He looked away.
“Yes.””
I felt betrayed.
Not because he wanted to protect me.
Because he had created a situation where everyone was hiding things from me.
“You made a contract with the man I loved.””
“I wanted to know his intentions.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was wrong.””
Those words surprised me.
My father rarely admitted mistakes.
Beatrice stepped backward.
“Now you understand.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
She frowned.
“I understand that everyone made choices for me.””
The sentence silenced everyone.
Beatrice looked down.
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
Then her phone rang.
She checked the screen.
Her face changed instantly.
“What happened?””
She listened.
Then looked at me.
“Ethan.””
Julian’s best friend.
The man behind the financial sabotage.
“What about him?””
Beatrice swallowed.
“He has the original files.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Impossible.””
Beatrice looked at him.
“You should know better than anyone.””
A chill moved through me.
“What files?””
She looked at me.
“The ones proving who really destroyed Julian’s company.””
Then she said something that changed everything.
“The person controlling Ethan isn’t me.””
May you like
A pause.
“It’s someone inside your family.””
