Chapter 4: The Photograph That Changed Everything

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned.

My father.

Standing outside a bank.

Standing beside Julian.

For a few seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Every possible explanation crossed my mind.

Maybe the picture was fake.

Maybe it was taken out of context.

Maybe there was something my father had not told me.

But one thought kept returning.

Why had my father been meeting Julian without me knowing?

My mother saw the expression on my face.

“What happened?””

I didn’t answer immediately.

I handed her the phone.

She looked at the image.

And for the first time in my life, I saw my mother lose her composure.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

“No.””

That one word frightened me.

“Mom?””

She looked at my father’s office door.

“Your father needs to explain this.””

A few minutes later, my father walked into the room.

He already knew something was wrong.

He always knew.

“What did you find?””

I stood up.

“What did you do?””

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Something closer to disappointment.

“Clara.””

“Don’t.””

I held up the phone.

“I got this from someone who worked at Julian’s company.””

My father looked at the picture.

Then he closed his eyes.

A long silence followed.

“You met him.””

It wasn’t a question.

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Before the investment.””

“Why?””

He walked toward the window.

“Because I wanted to understand the man my daughter planned to marry.””

I laughed once.

It wasn’t because anything was funny.

“You investigated him?””

“I protected you.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You watched him.””

My father turned around.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

I looked away.

“Did you know his company was in trouble?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know he was hiding it from me?””

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

I felt something break inside me.

Not because my father was wrong.

Because everyone seemed to know the truth except me.

“You all made decisions about my life.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Clara—”

“No.””

I wiped my eyes.

“Julian hid things. Beatrice insulted us. And now you’re telling me you knew everything?””

My father lowered his voice.

“I knew enough to worry.””

“Then why did you give him the money?””

That question stayed in the air.

My father looked at me.

“Because you asked me to.””

I froze.

“You could have said no.””

“Yes.””

“But you didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

He walked closer.

“Because I wanted to believe the man you loved was worth saving.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like regret.

My father placed the phone back on the table.

“The photograph is real.””

I swallowed.

“What else don’t I know?””

He hesitated.

That hesitation answered before he did.

“Dad.””

He sighed.

“Julian wasn’t the only person I investigated.””

“Who else?””

“Beatrice.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you find?””

Before he answered, my phone rang.

Julian.

Again.

I almost ignored it.

Then I remembered Rachel’s warning.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

His voice sounded desperate.

“Clara, please. We need to talk.””

“About what?””

“About my mother.””

I looked at my father.

“What about her?””

Julian lowered his voice.

“I found something.””

“What?””

“I checked the company accounts.””

“And?””

Silence.

“Clara, my mother wasn’t just aware of the financial problems.””

My heart started beating faster.

“She caused them.””

I stood completely still.

“What?””

“I found transfers.””

“To where?””

He swallowed.

“An account connected to her.””

I looked at my father.

He already knew.

“How long?””

“What?””

“How long have you known?””

Julian didn’t answer.

And that silence hurt.

“Julian.””

“I suspected something two weeks ago.””

I closed my eyes.

“Two weeks.””

“I was trying to confirm it.””

“You were trying to confirm it while marrying me?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“Clara, I was trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone used that phrase.

Protect.

Protect.

Protect.

But nobody ever asked what I wanted.

Then Julian said something that made me stop.

“My mother knew about your family before we met.””

The room went cold.

“What?””

“She knew who your father was.””

I looked at my father.

He slowly stood.

“Julian,” I whispered.

“Your mother didn’t accidentally hurt you.””

A pause.

“She did it because she thought you were a threat.””

The call ended.

And for the first time since my wedding night, I understood something.

The cake.

The humiliation.

The insults.

They were never random.

They were planned.

But one question remained.

Why had Beatrice wanted me gone so badly?

And when my father finally opened the file he had been hiding, I saw the answer.

A document with my name on it.

And a signature I recognized.
