Chapter 10: The Signature That Broke Me
I stared at the photograph on my phone.
Julian.
A lawyer’s office.
A contract.
His signature.
For a few seconds, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Because the man in that picture was the same man who had held my hand and promised me forever.
The same man who told me he loved me.
The same man who watched me bleed.
I looked at my father.
He didn’t say anything.
That was worse.
“Did you know?””
My voice came out quieter than I expected.
My father looked at me.
“No.””
I looked back at the photo.
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
The certainty in his voice should have comforted me.
It didn’t.
Because I had spent months believing I knew Julian.
And I was wrong.
My phone rang.
His name appeared.
Julian Whitmore.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
“Why?””
Silence.
He knew exactly what I meant.
“Clara.””
“Why did you sign it?””
His breathing changed.
“Who showed you?””
“That’s not an answer.””
A long pause.
Then:
“Richard.””
My father’s expression hardened.
Julian continued.
“I can explain.””
“Everyone says that.””
“Clara, please.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did you sign away control of your company?””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“When?””
“Before the wedding.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“Before the wedding?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You were trying to hide it.””
He didn’t argue.
That silence was becoming a pattern.
“Why?””
Julian exhaled.
“Because Richard gave me a choice.””
I looked at my father.
“What choice?””
Julian’s voice became quieter.
“He said he could save my company.””
My stomach dropped.
“By taking control?””
“Yes.””
“And you agreed?””
“I thought I could reverse it.””
“You thought.””
The word came out bitter.
“Clara, I never wanted you involved.””
I laughed softly.
“You married me.””
“I loved you.””
“Then why did you keep choosing everyone else’s secrets over me?””
He had no answer.
I hung up.
My father watched me carefully.
“Clara.””
“I don’t know who he is anymore.””
My father sat beside me.
“That feeling is painful.””
I looked at him.
“You knew that feeling.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Because of Richard?””
“Yes.””
For the first time, I saw how much my father had carried.
Not as a businessman.
As a brother.
Richard had spent years turning love into a weapon.
And now he had done the same to Julian.
But that didn’t erase Julian’s choices.
A person could be manipulated.
But they could also make mistakes.
My mother entered the room.
“Daniel.””
My father looked up.
“What?””
“The lawyer.””
“What lawyer?””
“The one who prepared Richard’s agreement.””
She placed a folder on the table.
“I found the name.””
My father opened it.
Then froze.
I leaned closer.
“What?””
He turned the page toward me.
The lawyer’s name was printed clearly.
And beneath it was another detail.
The firm.
A firm I recognized.
Because Julian had used them too.
I looked at my father.
“No.””
My father nodded slowly.
“Julian’s lawyer and Richard’s lawyer were the same person.””
The room went silent.
That meant one thing.
Julian wasn’t just trapped in Richard’s plan.
Someone had connected them from the beginning.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, it was a message from Rachel.
The accountant.
I opened it.
I have proof.
A file appeared.
I clicked.
Inside was a video.
Rachel sitting in an office.
She looked terrified.
“If you’re watching this, I’m probably already gone.””
My heart raced.
She continued.
“I found the original financial records.””
She held up documents.
“The company wasn’t destroyed by Beatrice.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Rachel looked directly at the camera.
“Richard was using Beatrice.””
My father leaned closer.
The video continued.
“He needed Julian desperate. He needed him to sign the transfer agreement.””
Rachel paused.
“And he needed Clara to believe Julian betrayed her.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because suddenly the betrayal looked different.
Not smaller.
Just more complicated.
Richard hadn’t simply destroyed a company.
He had destroyed trust.
Between husband and wife.
Between father and daughter.
Between families.
Then Rachel’s final message appeared beneath the video.
One sentence.
I found the person who helped Richard create the plan.
May you like
And it wasn’t Beatrice.
It was someone sitting at your wedding.
