Chapter 9: The Monster Behind the Smile
The video froze.
Thomas’s face remained on the screen.
A man I thought I knew.
A man I thought was loyal.
Now he was telling me everything I believed was wrong.
Hannah backed away.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, that’s not true.””
I grabbed her hand.
“Sweetheart.””
She shook her head.
“Dad, it can’t be true.””
Daniel looked at the laptop.
“We need to watch the rest.””
Ramirez nodded.
“Play it.””
The video continued.
Thomas appeared older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“I don’t know how much time I have before they find this.””
He looked around nervously.
“Christopher, you need to understand something.””
A pause.
“Zachary Albright is dangerous. But he isn’t the person who controlled everything.””
My stomach tightened.
Thomas continued.
“The person behind this has been manipulating Zachary from the beginning.””
Helen whispered:
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at the screen.
“I know who he means.””
The video continued.
“Christopher, I tried to stop it.””
Thomas wiped his face.
“But I was too late.””
He leaned closer to the camera.
“The person responsible for everything is someone who has been part of your family for years.””
The screen flickered.
Then a name appeared.
Nobody spoke.
Because we all saw it.
Hannah covered her mouth.
Daniel stepped backward.
Helen started crying.
The name on the screen was:
*HELEN MONTGOMERY.*
My wife.
My wife who stood beside me.
My wife who claimed she was trying to save us.
My wife who disappeared.
I looked at her.
She didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than anything.
“Helen?””
She closed her eyes.
“I can explain.””
My voice shook.
“You knew?””
She cried.
“Yes.””
“You knew this was coming?””
“Yes.””
“You knew Zachary was hurting Hannah?””
Her silence answered.
Hannah stared at her mother.
“How could you?””
Helen collapsed into a chair.
“Because I was trying to stop something bigger.””
Hannah laughed through tears.
“Bigger?””
“You let him hurt me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No!””
The word exploded through the room.
Everyone went silent.
Hannah stepped closer.
“You keep saying that.””
Her voice trembled.
“But nobody protected me.””
Helen looked broken.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
Hannah shook her head.
“You made choices.””
The words destroyed Helen.
I wanted to be angry.
I wanted answers.
But all I could see was my daughter.
The little girl who used to run into my arms.
The young woman who spent six years suffering alone.
I turned to Helen.
“Tell me the truth.””
She nodded slowly.
“Seven years ago, I discovered Zachary was working with someone else.””
“Who?””
She looked at the laptop.
“Thomas was right about one thing.””
A pause.
“I was involved.””
My heart sank.
“But not because I wanted to help them.””
She looked at Hannah.
“I was undercover.””
Nobody moved.
“What?””
Helen took a breath.
“Zachary wasn’t the beginning.””
“Then what was?””
“A group of people using him.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?””
Helen looked terrified.
“The people who funded his company.””
Ramirez frowned.
“Investors?””
“No.””
Her voice lowered.
“Criminal organizations.””
The room went quiet.
I stared at her.
“You expect me to believe you became part of this to stop them?””
“Yes.””
“Then why fake your death?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because they found out.””
“And Hannah?””
Helen looked away.
“That’s the part I couldn’t fix.””
The anger returned.
“You left her.””
“Yes.””
Her voice broke.
“I thought if they believed I was gone, they would stop watching her.””
Hannah whispered:
“But they didn’t.””
“No.””
Helen looked at her daughter.
“They used Zachary to keep you close.””
The laptop suddenly beeped.
A new file appeared.
Nobody touched it.
It opened by itself.
A video.
This time, it wasn’t Thomas.
It wasn’t Helen.
It was Hannah.
Recorded years ago.
She was sitting alone in Zachary’s mansion.
Bruised.
Crying.
And speaking directly to the camera.
“Dad…”
My heart stopped.
The video continued.
“If you’re watching this, it means I didn’t make it out.””
Hannah in the present covered her mouth.
On the screen, my daughter whispered the words I never expected to hear.
“Zachary wasn’t the person I was afraid of.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“The person I feared was the one who taught me never to trust anyone.””
The video ended.

And everyone slowly turned toward the same person.
Me.
