Chapter 4: The Secret My Daughter Carried Alone
The words on the paper blurred in my hands.
I had faced enemy fire.
I had stood in rooms where commanders told me impossible odds.
But nothing prepared me for the fear I felt looking at my own daughter.
The detective watched me carefully.
“Colonel Montgomery, do you know what this means?””
I looked down again.
The document was a copy of a legal agreement.
A divorce agreement.
Signed six years ago.
The exact year Hannah married Zachary.
The year she told me she had never been happier.
My throat tightened.
“Hannah.””
She looked away.
That was the answer before she even spoke.
“You knew about this?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
The hallway became silent.
Zachary leaned against the wall, watching everything unfold.
For the first time, he looked comfortable again.
That bothered me.
Because a guilty man shouldn’t look relieved.
Unless he knew something everyone else didn’t.
“Hannah,” I said softly, “why?””
She wiped her face.
“Because I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“You let that man hurt you for six years to protect me?””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“I let him believe I was trapped.””
Everyone looked at her.
Even Zachary.
“What are you talking about?”” he asked.
Hannah turned toward him.
And I saw something I had not seen in years.
Strength.
“I knew what you were doing.””
Zachary’s expression changed.
“You don’t know anything.””
“I knew about the money.””
His face went still.
“I knew about Evelyn.””
The room froze.
“I knew about the fake companies,” Hannah continued.
“I knew you were moving money before anyone else found out.””
Zachary stared at her.
“How?””
She laughed sadly.
“Because you underestimated me.””
I felt my chest tighten.
My daughter had been fighting a war inside that mansion.
Alone.
She continued.
“When I found the files in your office, I copied everything.””
Zachary stepped forward.
“You stupid—”
Officer Ramirez immediately moved between them.
“Take another step and you’ll be spending tonight in a cell.””
Zachary stopped.
But his eyes stayed locked on Hannah.
“You think you won?””
Hannah didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked at Daniel.
“Tell him.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That’s why I came back.””
I turned toward him.
“You’ve been alive for seven years. Where have you been?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“Running.””
“From what?””
“From Zachary.””
Nobody spoke.
He took a breath.
“Seven years ago, I discovered what he was doing. I tried to expose him.””
“And?””
“He framed me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel looked at the detective.
“He created evidence showing I stole money from the company.””
Evelyn’s voice came through the phone.
“Because Daniel was the only person who could prove the truth.””
I looked at the speaker.
“Then why disappear?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because Zachary threatened my family.””
The words hit me.
“What family?””
He didn’t answer.
And that scared me.
Then Hannah spoke.
“Dad, there’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Mom didn’t die because of an accident.””
My entire body went cold.
Nobody mentioned my late wife.
Not for years.
My voice became a whisper.
“What did you say?””
Hannah looked at Zachary.
“He knew Mom.””
Zachary’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
It was the first time I heard panic in his voice.
Hannah stepped closer.
“Six years ago, before I married him, Mom found something.””
I could barely breathe.
“My mother was dead.””
“Yes,” Hannah whispered.
“But she discovered what Zachary was doing before she died.””
The detective looked at me.
“Colonel, did your wife ever mention Zachary Albright?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly memories I had buried started coming back.
My wife’s nervous phone calls.
The night she told me she was afraid.
The folder I found missing from our house.
I always thought grief had made me forget details.
Maybe I had been ignoring them.
Zachary suddenly laughed.
A quiet, cold laugh.
“You really want to open this door?””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
He stared at me.
“Your daughter didn’t stay because she was afraid of me.””
He paused.
“She stayed because she knows what happened to your wife.””
Hannah’s face went pale.
“Stop.””
But Zachary continued.
“She knows the truth.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Hannah?””
Tears rolled down her face.
“Dad…”
A sound came from downstairs.
A crash.
Then another.
Officer Ramirez immediately reached for his radio.
“Everyone stay here.””
But before anyone could move, the lights in the mansion went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the hallway.
And in that darkness, someone whispered from behind us.
“Christopher…”
I turned.
A familiar voice.
May you like
A voice I hadn’t heard in years.
“Your daughter has been lying to you.””
